Just tried to program an american telephone number into my UK phone and i just wondered if there is a short cut code same as +44.

I know that a UK number can be changed from 011 44.... to +44... and i wonderd if there is something for US numbers, as it would mean it always dials ok from wherever you are in the world.

Any ideas??

Yep - the UK code is 44 - the US code is 1 (how did you guess they would bag the best number [msnwink]).

You still have to dial the international access code in front of that i.e 00 from the UK.

The only reason you publish +44 is that the + equals the international access code for that country.

I think you missed the point Paul.

You can program a mobile to dial +44 or +1 rather than 01144 or 001.

If you use this method the call will always get through regardless of where you are in the world.

I.e. If i have an American number in my phone and its programmed as 001 xxx xxxx then this would work whilst i was in the UK but when i fly over to the US the number would not dial, whereas if i have +1 xxx xxxx then this will work either in the UK or US.

Alernately all my UK numbers stored in my UK phone are stored as +44 xxxx xxxxxx this way i can call them whilst in the UK or the US without changing anything.

How do you get a + on a UK landline in order to do this. There isn't one on my phone?

I don't think you do - as far as I have seen it only works on cellphones as they are designed to be portable and to be taken from country to country.

I just put 001 or 0044 and that works fine.
