If you have trouble sleeping during this hot spell, fill your hot water bottle!
No,I haven't gone mad;fill it with iced water and take it to bed.....bliss!

Or a better alternative - Go stay in your air-conditioned villa, can't think of a better excuse to get back to Florida.

TIP NUMBER TWO (I wish I could say I thought it up,but just heard it on LBC
Place a bucket of ice in front of your fan to double the cooling effect. They also said sleep alone,so that is tip number 3
Emm, if you add crushed ice it beats the hottest night

On a more serious note please be careful with children and fans in this weather. We lived in Cyprus for a while (many moons ago), but still remember two stories that haunt me.
One small baby caught pneumonia and sadly died after the parents had put him directly under the fan to keep him cool at night.
With the other little one, the parents had 'fixed' a fan to the wall over the little ones bed and it fell on him.
I am sure we are all much more sensible nowadays, but worth bearing in mind.
Anyway, enough of all that, let's find other fun ways to keep cool. One of my favourites would be a nice large gin and tonic.[beer] Or (if it's before 6 p.m. how about a nice large soft drink [drinkpepsi]

cold glass of lager would suit me down to the ground right now, but have had my quota for this week on saturday evening in the garden [msncool]

We stayed in an impossibly hot hotel once and I soaked a towel in cold water and put it in my back
Worked a treat, but I had a rather wet bed to explain to the chambermaid.
Liesa, I think because mostlocal drivers work in the tourist industry they are more patient. Also the roads are wider and it is easier to find places (except last time when we went 50 miles north on the 27 instead of south;fortunately it could not be blamed on my navigation as I had not got involved with the instructions)

i'll show this to hubby when he comes in, i'll let him explian about the 1900 miles we did and that was mostly cause we got lost everytime we went out trying to find somewhere specific we ended up lost!!
and its usually my fault!![msnwink]

Done that too!! :D
Another idea is to wrap a freezer pack in a thinnish towel and use it as well as the cold water bottle - one for your feet and one for your middle!!

Can you buy a window air conditioner in the UK?
You can Kay but they're really expensive and usually only commercial buildings have them - I don't ever remember seeing a house with one like you do in the US.
I'm considering sneaking out to the car and luxuriating in the air con for ten mins! [8D] If I was really desperate, I suppose I could sleep in there... :D But, there again, could I afford the £49 ($88) newly refuelled tank price - no, perhaps I'll put up with the heat! [:O]
can't say we ever have a hot day in Belfast, so will only use the hot water bottle for heat purposes.:)

I agree this does help, but I spend half the night getting up to go to the bathroom
