does anybody know what is the proceedure is when you have a severe disability and live miles away from London when the machine readable passports run out and we have to get a visa.

it would be a nightmare for us to travel to London. Have just renewed out passports so we have time but don't want to buy into someting and then find out DS can't get[msnscared]

If you have just renewed your passports then you will have 5 years for children and 10 years for adults before there is a chance you may need a visa. However within that timeframe the biometric ones will almost certainly have become available (although that in itself may require a trip to a passport office somewhere).

It is only if your passport is issued after Oct 26th 2005 and the new ones aren't available that a visa will be required.

I am not sure of the procedure if you are severely disabled with regard to getting a visa, there may be exclusions as with the under 14 and over 65 donn't need to apply in person, but it may be the Embassy say that if you can travel to Florida then you can travel to London, someone else may know.

Ali, the following link www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/niv/mail.html gives the exclusions for travelling to the embassy and it would appear that you would have to go in person. However, if you lok at the top of the embassy page there is a link for the Consulate General in Edinburgh. They do say they will not handle visa applications, but given that you are in Glasgow, and given the extenuating circumstances, might you be able to travel there instead? Thought it might be worth a try. This is assuming you would have to get a visa following Babblin Boo's post. Hope this helps. [msnsmile]
