Would be grateful for any input on the following scenario;

Does anyone know if it would be permissible for someone to stay for say 85 days in the States under the visa waiver scheme then leave the country by flying to one of the islands in the Caribbean to stay for a few weeks and then return for another period of up to 90 days before returning home to the U.K?[?]

It used to be possible.

However someone posted on this board some while ago that they are much stricter on the interpretation of the regulations for re-entry from Canada/Mexico/Caribbean in the link posted by Ray9. - the wording has been revised.

At the end of the day(as always) it depends on the Immigration officer at your point of re-entry from the Caribbean. On your initial entry he might query why you haven't got a return ticket back to UK within the 90 days.

It would be a lot safer to fly back to UK and re-enter from there; or get a visa which allows 6 months anyway.
