View Full Version : Working in Florida
Me and a few friends, about 5 of us, are planning on going to miami, florida for the summer(were from Ireland). June to October, i was just wondering what is like to get jobs and accomodation for that period and if i could be pointed in the right direction for these. Would it be an appropriate place to spend the summer or would anyone recommend other locations in florida to stay. Were basically looking for a good nightlife and near to be near the beach. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

My 18 year old is just fixing up her summer work in Marthas' Vineyard in Massachussetts and she's going through Bunac (website www.bunac.org.uk) on their Work America programme. They have a job directory or you can find your own job and sponsor the visa application.
They arrange working or volunteering opportunities worldwide and have been going for quite a long time (her driving instructor had 2 trips through them and recommended them). My daughter applied for a few jobs from their directory (you apply direct to employers) and as those in the directory have employed students before they can offer help with accommodation etc as well.
The closing date for Work America for this summer is May 20th so there isn't long to try and get organised. You can actually apply without having a job and find your own either before you go or when you get to America but obviously visa is more straightforward if job and accommodation is sorted in advance.

So she is on the Islands....how cool......if you want she can have my phone number and address in case she needs anything from someone nearby........
thanks for the reply, we have everything sorted regards going to florida, going through usit in Ireland. We just need to find accomodation and a job. Accomodation is the main priority for us at the moment, so any links to places for accomodation for the summer i would be grateful for, plus does anyone know if its easy to get a job there??

That would be great, thank you Chrizzy, as is often the case Mum and Dad are more worried than she is but looking at Marthas Vineyard online it looks gorgeous there so we're sure she will have a fabulous time, although there's not much in the way of nightlife from the looks of things, shes looking forward to the beaches and peace after Uni in London being quite hectic.

I realised when I checked the link you would be going through USIT, do they not have anything in the job directory which appeals?
I think you may need to find the job first and sort accommodation when you know where you are working. Unless you are able to drive over there and can hire a car (you have to be over 21 in most places- and under 25 there is normally a surcharge for insurance).
My daughter had a couple of job offers from Windermere in Florida but the public transport is virtually non-existant and accommodation expensive so wasn't really viable.
If you are looking for 5 you might be able to get some sort of house share at an affordable price but again I would think it is going to be dependant on where you are working.
