Florida's Season of Festivals

From the start of the year through early spring is a time locals call Season. It's a time of festivals, benefit galas, art shows, county fairs and much more.

The origins of this unofficial 'Season' date back to the early 20th century when wealthy socialites and businessmen would travel the Sunshine State to escape northern winters. The desire for entertainment brought about small, local plays, concerts and fairs. Today many Florida festivals attract visitors from around the world.

During the Season you can experience the many faces of Florida. Old Island Days in Key West celebrates the island's relaxing lifestyle with poetry readings, sailboat races and even a shell-blowing contest. Across the state, major league baseball teams warm up for the summer with spring training; the Miami area is awash with international art and fashion shows; the Jacksonville area offers wine tasting; Central Florida serves up blues and country concerts; and north Florida welcomes lively fairs and expositions.

And here in Central Florida there is

Please can you give directions to Kissimmee Lakefront Park as I haven't got a clue where it is. Is this the place where you can do fishing too?

Chris, it's actually in Kissimmee itself. If you go along the 192, towards St Cloud, you'll come to the archway entrance to Kissimmee town. Turn right there until you get to the small shopping area.

Any of the roads to the left will take you to the lake front and there are parking places, picnic tables, etc. The lake is Lake Toho where you can fish (with a fishing licence - see the fishing section on the forum for info on how to get these).

I've found a map at http://osceolanewsgazette.com/leisure_now02/map.html with more comprehensive info on what's available there.
