How much longer would it take to buy a day ticket at the booths on arrival would it delay us much . How early would we need to be there to queue - eg for wdw epcot and/or mgm as we have friends with us for only a short time who may only do 1 or possibly 2 one of them so a hopper would be no use whereas we will definatley be using the hoppers

Depends on what time you arrive and on which day. We've queued variously for between 5 minutes or 45 minutes but they now have security searches too for everyone so that might take a little time, even if you're using your Hoppers. Park entrances are usually busier up to about 10.30 am and then the number of people thins out.
Your friends can always arrange to meet you somewhere inside the park (ie for a coffee or something) so that you can get on with things while they're getting in if the queues are that long. If they do the things they missed at the beginning on the way out at around 4 - 4.30 pm, the ride queues are usually short or non-existant by that time.

If they buy day passes your friends will have to buy separate passes for Epcot and MGM as with the day pass it is a 1 park only pass, i.e you can't go from park to park as with the hoppers.
