I fly out on March the 3rd and yesterday discovered I've got Mumps! The right hand side of my face is swolen so I look like like a lopsided hampster.
Does anyone know how long this will take to go down? So far its only been 24 hours.

And if only one side is swollen now it could be the other might come up later.

Nothing personal but if you are flying from Gatwick with Virgin on 3rd March please don't give it to us (neither I nor my husband has had it).

Hope you're feeling better soon, I remember when my mum had it (along with my 2 brothers and 2 sisters) it was very painful for her as an adult - muggins just had to do all the shopping etc for the rest of the family whilst they were quarantined for a few weeks in total as they came down with it one by one (this was 35 years ago so things might have changed and you are probably allowed out much sooner).

Spoke to Dr yesterday, can be contagious for up to 21 days but don't know how long I,ve had it??

If him in doors gets it it won't be his face swelling up though!, what a pair we will look, me with a hampster face and him walking like John Wayne! (His Mum has told us that he had it when he was a baby, so hopefully he will be OK)

Still it's nice to get a few days extra off work.[msnscared]

Diane, just because you have one Parotid gland swollen, it does not automatically mean that it is mumps. You can get other forms of infective parotitis, some of which (NOT mumps, though) can be treated with antibiotics. It could even be a blocked salivary duct. I suggest that you see your GP.

I think there is a very good chance that you will be fully recovered by 3rd March. Certainly, any bacterial infection would have responded to antibiotics; if it turns out to be a viral infection (like mumps) antibiotics are useless, but anti-inflammatory agents like Ibuprofen will relieve the pain and swelling - again, check with your GP if these are suitable for you, given any medical history. Both the symptoms and infectivity should be negligible by the time ou are due to fly out. All the best.

Madabouttigger
21-02-2005, 14:35
Thanks for that Nostro, saw the GP yesterday and he confirmed it was Mumps. He has given me antibiotics just in case it's a dental abscess. He also told me to take Ibuprofen for the pain, which has helped a lot. Apparently we have quite a lot of Mumps cases in this area at the moment, as I work with the general public looks like I possibly picked it up at work.

Is there a chance that I may now get it on the other side to balance things out?

Thanks for all your kind thoughts - its much appreciated.[msnsmile]

Another reason that you have to get better is that the US Immos may not allow you into the country if you continue to look like a lopsided hampster. They might insist on quarantine. [laugh][laugh]

"Another reason that you have to get better is that the US Immos may not allow you into the country if you continue to look like a lopsided hampster. They might insist on quarantine"

That's if the airline have let you fly in the first place. If you, at that stage are still looking like this then a) the airline will probably stop you flying in case it is spread through the ac. and b) I think it may be classed as a "communicable disease"so they may deny access under visa waiver.

Whatever I'd check with your insurance company and see the position if you have to cancel - just in case.

Hopefully you'll be better soon and just think of all the daytime tv you can watch?

Which must be quite difficult under the circumstances.

On a more serious note, following on from Steph Goodrum's posting, I think you should be OK by the time you're due to fly. The Ibuprofen should bring the swelling down even if the antibiotic is ineffective (which it will be for mumps) and you should have improved clinically enough to be allowed into a plane.

How in the world did you get the mumps!!!??? I thought that was one disease on its way to being wiped out, due to vacinations. I sure hope so, as I never had them as a kid, but today's kids all get immunizied against them.

I am lucky never to have had the mumps, you certainly dont hear much about it these days.

However, a couple of years ago, my son was admitted to hospital with a dangerously high temperature and after two weeks of the doctors trying every test imaginable, they concluded it must have been Scarlet Fever, (which my mother in law had told them from day 1[msnsmile2])

I hope you feel better soon Diane[grouphug]

Madabouttigger

Ah but over here a lot of parents have stopped having their children immunised with the MMR. There has been a lot of publicity about it possibly causing Autism, so it is now on the increase in this country.
I work with the general public, and this is what happens!

Mumps is far from being 'wiped out', even though its incidence has fallen dramatically in recent years. Of course, the immunisation that the present day kids are having helps and by the time they get to be adults, it might be eradicated. But one cannot be certain; only time will tell.

Really feel for you, I had mumps at the grand old age of 21, over Christmas and New Year - real good fun!
Hope you recover soon... unfortunately it took me 4 weeks before the Doctor allowed me back to work.

Fingers crossed

Hope you get well in time for your holiday. It seems that lots of these 'old' diseases are coming back. Me and my daughter both got whooping cough at the beginning of December. It lasts 3 months so we are getting better. We'd both been vaccinated but its starting to become apparent that it wears off after 10 years.[msnsad]What with that and people not vaccinating their children through fear these illnesses will soon become rampant again.

steph_goodrum
22-02-2005, 02:05
"We'd both been vaccinated but its starting to become apparent that it wears off after 10 years."

Chris another one that is becoming recurrent is TB. Partially because of the immigrants coming into the country who have never been vaccinated, but I also found out recently from my niece that her baby who is now 14 months old had to be vaccinated at a few weeks as they asked if anybody in the family had ever had TB and her dads uncle who they were in contact with had it many years ago. Apparently it has been found the elderly who suffered from it as they get older and their immune system weakens the TB becomes active enough , not for them to get it but to pass it on to young babies.

Coincidentally we wondered if that would explain why our daughter when tested a few years ago was told she did not need the vaccination as she had either been in contact with TB or had a natural immunity to it and my husbands mother had TB and was ill for quite a long time with it around 50-52 years ago. She was about 60 when our daughter was born 18 years ago and this was obviously before the latest research was available.

My son is 17 and his friend caught mumps a week ago. Although my son had his MMR jab when he was 2 years old the nurse at my sugery advised him to have a booster which she gave him immediately. Seemingly the jab given all those years ago is not enough to cover you with this new outbreak.

She has also advised a Menangitis C booster in a months time.

God, What a day I have had!
Watched a bit of Discovery Health, you know all the style and makeover type programmes looking for some insperation then had a wee bit lunch and took some painkillers....well I spent the next 2 hours in absolute agony, fainting, flushing and shaking involuntary and lying on the bathroom floor covered in a wet towel...not a pretty site.

The painkillers the Doc gave me were knock out material I had to crawl to the sofa and then I was too weak to get up on it and lay on the floor for an hour. 90% back to normal now have just struggled to drink lots to try to flush rest out of my system but woah, these tablets are going back....cocodimal if anyone is curious, I have had them before but I think with being ill it just hit me hard. Missed out on a whole afternoon of my beloved OV!:D

'Co-Codamol' is a very misleading name and people who think they have had it before might not have done so. This is because there are two strengths, both referred to as 'co-codamol' colloquially, although there are other names. The lower strength one contains 8mg of codeine phosphate oer tablet with 500mg paracetamol and can be purchased over the counter (usually as Solpadeine). The prescription only higher strength one containd 30mg codeine per tablet, making it nearly 4 times stronger (Solpadol, Kapake, Tylex etc). If you take 2 of those without being used to it, all the side effects mentioned by CDV can occur. But people taking it regularly soon 'get used' to these effects.

It was Tylex Nostromo, don't think I would want to risk them again to get used to it, I really felt dreadful, luckily I knew it would only last for a wee while so tried not to panic too much. Still got a bit of abdominal pain but nothing like earlier when I could not even stand.

I had them about 4 years ago when I first injured my back and remember feeling spaced out but nothing like this afternoon. Going to stick to my beloved Advil gel capsules from now on in!

I feel for you CVD...I had the same thing happen to me at 17...the doctor give me something for the flu to help me rest....but he give me pills by mistake that they give people who have been on those kind of table many years.....I had panic attacks after for 2 years.....and still sometimes get them.....I had the same thing happen after having pain killers for my back and I gained weight......doc never told me that could be a problem for years to come....I can still gain weight or lose it almost over night......and that was from 10 years ago.....now I take nothing unless I know all the side affects....which mean I never take anything unless I have a bad headache....or if I'm away on holiday and have a cold etc and don't want to put others out....and then I only take over the counter and half the dose......my son has never had more than one spoonful of baby pain killer when he needs it....he is still not on adult pain killers and he is 17.....his body had learnt to cope with pain and fever....like mine has...

No wonder, then. Tylex is the 'stronger' brand of co-codamol, one of a kind that you can only get on a script. But the side effects become rapidly less noticeable in those who have to take it on a regular basis. Also, opiate analgesics like codeine and dyhydrocodine vary in their tendency to cause certain side effects depending on the severity of the primary sypmtom - pain. If you take them for moderate pain you often feel more side effects than if you do for severe pain.

When i had a slipped disc and sciatica i was prescribed Ibuprofen, Codeine and Paracetamol (to be taken all at once).

NOT a drug to be taken lightly.

All opiate analgesics like codeine, dihydrocodine, tramadol, pethidine, morphine etc cause lightheadedness, nausea and constipation to varying degrees. There are huge individual variations to these effects, depending on age, build, race etc, but even then effects can be different among twin siblings. Also, most side effects (except constipation) improve after regular use in those who need to do so.

Co-proxomol, - this has now been withdrawn,[/quote]

This is the most stupid decision that the DoH have mede in recent years. Co-proxamol is a very useful moderate strength painkiller and causes no more side effects than what might be expected from others of its genre (meaning that some people like Chunkichink might be more susceptible - that happens with almost all painkillers). But this theory that it is more likely to cause accidental or delibrate OD is nonsensical. The only reason there is this 'evidence' is because Co-proxamol is cheaper and so prescribed more often than others and therefore there is more of it floating around for stupid people to OD on. What's needed is stricter control on prescribing methods, which is not very good at present.

When the 'ban' on Co-proxamol is completed, its place on the 'market' will be taken up by another preparation, almost certainly Co-Dydramol. After a few years, that will probably meet the same fate, thanks to the 'vision' of out policy makers.[msnmad]
