Anyone know why the Sky Tower is not open?

I was there last August and it was closed, and looking at the website just now it says, closed until further notice.

Is it closed for good,or are they doing some work on it.

Has anyone ever been up it?

Thanks.

John

It was closed in October 2002, there was a lot of boarding around it as I remember and signs saying a new attraction was coming soon

They were not allowing people to go up in May 2004 when we went to SW. I thought it was a temporary closure then for some refurbishment, but now it seems permanent. Maybe it is some sort of safety question after 9/11 and all that.

We went up it last Easter - lovely view.

Convinced me I wouldn't like Kraken though - you see just how bad it is from there [sick].

Arrrrh go on Jo, it is brilliant!!!! I braved it on our second visit and loved it, on our first trip we all went on Atlantis, not your bulk standard log flume by any means, thought I was going to die!!

Its such a shame about the tower, I did go on the first time and it was lovely, beautiful views, I remember we had to pay extra to go on it, can't remember how much perhaps it is too costly to run?

I have an important role as bag holder and daughter minder. Once she meets the required height I've had it!

We actually managed to go on in June 04...only time.
Views are superb... agree with Jo (namsake!!) over Kraken.
WE have passes so did not have to pay sure however it was something like $4 though cannot be sure.

We went up in it in June 2004 but it was closed when we went out a month later in July and again last week.
Fantastic views of the park and surrounding area
This is a photo I took last year

Great photo of Kraken.

Probably the only place you could be to get that shot, apart from an helicopter.

Fantastic photo of Kraken, shame if the tower isn't going to reopen as judging by the photo it would have been great to see for miles around.[msnsmile2]

We went on it twice during our trip this month.

See Photo Gallery for views from the tower.

Well worth a visit! Great views from almost 300ft up of Seaworld and Orlando

Just a tip, if you are a passholder, don't be talked into coming back later, we was told that we would be able to go straight on if we booked on later in the day as there was a 25 minute wait, so we booked to go on it at 4.30pm, still had to queue for 20 minutes, there is no fast pass system. We spoke to the girl advising us to wait, it works out that this is only done for passholders so they can get the paying guests on it first!!

Only the upper deck is in use at the moment. So you have to use the stairs to get to the upper deck!

So the Sea World Tower has reopened? That's good news and it answers my query in the 'photos' section. One certainly gets a panoramic view from the top.

In all the times we have been we have never been up the tower, it has often been closed. Will try this year. Although I must seem like boring old f**t because as well as suffering from motion sickness I also hate heights:(

Well, we will start a club then Lyn, we go for the 15th time in a couple of weeks, I too have to join the club you mention[msnwink]But, hey it is not a competition is it?[msnscared] As long as we love our Florida trips the fact that we don't do high towers, big drops, death defying rides etc etc, that is all that matters right? Mind the views do look spectacular[msnwink]

I have a phobia of heights too, but only if unsupported. Thus, the Sea World Sky Tower would be scary, but not something like Old Town's Sky Coaster, where the harness gives a feeling of security.

I don't like height but I went up this in 89 as I hate not to do things, I did the eifle tower for this reason (prpbably cos I think I will have missed something)
I used to love coasters and things but I have to admit to getting a bit nervous now I don't know if its age or because I now have a son who loves rides and I spend all my time hanging on to him to make sure he dosen't fall out!!!! Even when hubby goes on with him I keep telling him "hang on to him" Must be old age!!!!![easter1]

I dont like heights as well but after seeing the great photo of the kraken will try when we are out there in July/Aug, as it has always been closed when we have been previously.

Just to let you all know that we asked about the tower whilst we were there a couple of weeks ago as we wanted to go up and it was closed on both occasions were told that it had cabling problems due to the hurricanes and it was hit and miss if it opened.Shame really but we'll try again next time! It was closed on our last visit, but lets hope its open when we go later this month!

SeaWorld's 400-foot landmark, The Tower, has been a visual icon since the park opened in 1973. Transformed as the centerpiece of the all-new Tower Island, it is now surrounded by an aged fortress and a bar overlooking the picturesque harbor.

The Tower's six-minute capsule ride takes guests at a leisurely pace up to the top and back again, and slowly rotates for a complete bird's-eye view. From the capsule, guests can see downtown Orlando and other area attractions.

The ride is free to Annual Passport Holders (Gold and Platinum I think not sure about Silver)

Ana

I'm pretty sure it's free for Silver too

We have been to SW numerous times, and it only seems to work very intermintantly. It was actually working the last time we were there, and the views from the top are fantastic. Well worth the ride.
