we stayed in time-share in vegas NO don't be shocked it was fabulous it was part of the flamingo hilton on the strip but was no ordinary room we had two suites with kitchen's and jacuzzi bathroom's every luxury and i am sure that you could possibly book it direct with the hotel...might be worth a try:)

We stayed at Circus Cirucs when we went to LV. It was a good hotel especially for the children, having a theme park inside the hotel. If we went again, just adults I would stay at Caesars Palace, no contest.[msnsmile2]
We booked through Virgin holidays, not cheap but not too bad. If you do a search on one of the search engines it will suggest some good sites to book hotels.[msnsmile2]

That's a huge question. There are books and books written about that very subject.

Some of the hotels have some very complicated policies so whichever booking means you go for also look for dates a few days each side to get a feel for what is happening.

One place to start is the usual selection of hotel and travel websites. Most of these list most of the big Las Vegas hotels. It's a good place to start.

Whenever we go I always book direct with the hotel (usually the Mirage) via their website. Keep an eye open for specials as there can be some great packages available at times.

The benefit I've found by booking direct is that there is a 24hr cancellation policy. Hotel rates in Las Vegas are changing all the time. If the room rate drops you can cancel and re-book to take advantage of it.

I've also found that the Mirage keeps full records of every time you visit when you book direct. Most hotels are running at almost full capacity all of the time (some even manage to run at over 100% occupancy) so they are almost always upgrading rooms or views at check-in. Just like airlines with frequent flyer programs, they seem to offer slightly preferential treatment (i.e. more room upgrades, etc.) to people who return to them over and over again.

We've been lucky enough to score a room upgrade quite often, and once spent a full week in an enormous penthouse suite, at the cost of $79/night for the standard rate room booking.

I assume that the Mirage is not unique in this and would figure that all hotels there operate much the same.

In terms of hotel booking policies, try to avoid arriving on a Friday if at all possible. If your dates feel very expensive you are probably clashing with a conference or other event (avoid Comdex and the Pro Bull Riders at all costs).

I assume you mean the best site to book LV Hotels? It varies widely and your best bet is to shop around and see. In some cases, Hotel A might have a very competitive offer on a particular site but not Hotel B.

If you are planning a good holiday there, I suggest you get the Las Vegas version of the Brit's Guide, by Karen Marchbank.

If you are looking for something stiff upper-lippy and luxurious, try Bellagio or Venetian. If you want luxury with a lively atmosphere, Caesar's Palace is still the best, closely followed by The Mirage, Paris, Aladin, MGM Grand and Rio. Slightly lower in the pecking order are places like New York New York, Treasure Island, Monte Carlo, LV Hilton, Luxor etc.

Personally i think its best to check out the hotel's own websites as often they give you the best rates.

If you use somewhere like [name edited] or [name edited] they will charge you a booking fee.

For example i have stayed at the Barbary Coast hotel a couple of times and if you book at their site they promise that if you find a cheaper rate they will match it and give you a few bucks off.
I also stayed at the Luxor and you get a $10.00 a night reduction if you book the room through their own website.

Another good thing to do is go to the hotels websites and join their e.mailing list where you will recieve offers through your e.mail that are lower than normal and only on offer to those who are registered.

Room rates vary a lot in Vegas depending on whats in town any particular time.

If there is a big convention in town or a big sporting event like Superbowl weekend or March madness which is College Basketball then the rates rise sharply.

Have stayed at MGM, Luxor, New York New York, Caesars Palace and Bellagio. Much preferred Bellagio as the accommocation was so nice. Caesars was nice but they treated us very badly, we had been booked for 12 months and they gave our room to a conference delegate who they could get a better rate from. They did move us to a suite at the Luxor at no extra cost but it was the principle of the matter, no apology and lost 2 days of our vacation moving from one hotel to another and back again, spending 6 hours "in Limbo" between check out of one hotel and check in to the next. I would never stay at Caesars again on principle. [msnsad]

I accept what you are saying Liz, but no matter how hard the management tries, such confusions occur with almost every resort in Las Vegas, considering the constantly 'floating' crowd. Some friends of ours stayed at the Venetian last year - and if their story is to be believes, almost everything went wrong from the moment they arrived at the place. Now they hate the very mention of that hotel, but as you know there are others with opposite experiences and opinions. I must confess that I am very fond of old Caecar's - the Forum Shops are the 'most'.

Another very good hotel which people have praised is Mandalay Bay. It is in a slightly disadvantageous position at the extreme southern end of the Strip, but I have read good reports about it.

Sorry to hear you had bad experience of Caesars Palace Liz, we haven't stayed in it but it looked so nice from what we saw, the forum shops were fantastic. We did have breakfast there, which was quite good.[msnsmile2]

Look into some of the 'Off the Strip' hotels. Arizona Charlies, Rio, SamsTown, to name a few. And also look at the older hotels. The Tropicana, The Mirage, The Excalibur, The Alladin. They all have better rates than the big name strip casinos.

I lived in Vegas in the early 90s. If you do visit, go exploring. Take a day and drive to Mt. Charleston. Do Red Rock Canyon. Visit Lake Mead. Red Rock Canyon has some great hiking trails. Mt. Charleston, in the summer, gets you out of the 110dgrs heat. It's usually in the 70s when you get up there. And the Mt. Charleston Lodge is a great place to eat! Also you see 'green' again! If you are a Vegas resident you miss green!
Take a Grand Canyon flight. Senic Airlines are the best airline to use.

Have fun. I miss Vegas!

We stayed in the New York New York and it was brill. Loads to see and do, got its own Roller Coaster! Lord of the Dance was playing in there at the time so hubby presented me with a couple of tickets one evening as a surprise, suspect it was cheaper than letting me loose on the roulette wheels!!It was at New Year 2001 and we had a whale of a time.

Also stayed in the hotel beside the chapel where we got married, something along the lines of vivalasvegasweddingchapel. The rooms are fantastic, all themed. It is owned by a guy caled Ron Decar who was the no1 Evis impersonator in LV for 15 years. The website is a bit....Vegasy but it was a great place to stay away from the Razamataz for a couple of nights of newly weded bliss;)

We booked directly with the hotel (NYNY)it was a funny story. Mr CDV phoned up and they told him they were full and we could not book in arriving on a Saturday night anyway. 10 minutes later I called them and 5 minutes later had a double suite arriving on Saturday evening........:D:D.

HI Alex

We stayed at Mandalay Bay and the Luxor last year. Mandalay Bay was by far the best but the Luxor was ok. Only trouble we had with the Luxor was that even though we booked in after the time given one of our rooms was not ready. We had about an hours wait for the room so not best pleased. Later last year we decided to go back again and this time stayed in a villa about 5 miles from the Strip. It was pure luxury but of course not quite the same as staying directly on the Strip and we had to make the trip every day - though hubby hired a convertible to make the trips more pleasurable for him!!!!!! We booked all of these over the internet, doing all research ourselves which made it the cheapest way possible. The Mandalay Bay quoted us a much higher price when we were there for another room and told us that the internet prices were extremely good. Hope you have a great time and enjoy wherever you stay.

Some LV Hotels like Luxor, Circus Circus, Excalibur, Imperial Palace, Stratosphere and even Treasure Island are sometimes used by Travel Agents to 'fill-in' guests who have only given a mid-range tariff but no particular hotel preference. That's probably why you had that delay at Luxor on arrival.
