I am going back to Orlando for my third time next October with my brother and sister in law for their second time
We have always wanted to do kennedy space centre and just never got round to it.
One problem, my sister in law absolutely refuses to go or have any interest in it!!! even a shuttle launch or to see the Shuttle
I am sure that she would enjoy it if we can get her there, can anyone help with reviews good or bad?
Thanks

We went for the first time this October and we spent the whole day there. I actually thought my kids would be board, but they were not at all. It is very interesting it was the highlight of that trip.
When we travel with family and friends and part of the group is not interested in something that others are then we go our seperate ways. I would never let my SIL prevent me if I really wanted to go. Let her do something else for the day or she can join you. We have learned that not everybody is interested in the same things and that is OK.

I love the space centre for the views on the bus tour.......but then I've always wanted to go into space.....so its of great interest to me.....
It's an absolutely awesome place and I think you would need quite an active dis-interest in anything scientific or space related to not enjoy a day there.
To generate even the tiniest smidge of interest why not watch Apollo 13 (Tom Hanks). It's a pretty good film even for non space buffs (imdb rates it 7.5/10) and now that Kennedy have created the new Saturn 5 centre it makes it all quite real.
If conspiracy theory is more your sister-in-law's thing watch Capricorn One instead and then go to Kennedy to decide if the space programme is real or not.
Either way it's quite thought provoking.
Hope it works out for you. It's a great place and it would be a real shame to miss it if it is something you really want to do.

We've been to Florida a few times in the past and this is always a must see for us.
No one is forced to go or refuses!
To think that you can see the actual Shuttle that Flies 100's of 1000's of miles on each mission just blows my mind!
To be able to see a part of the history of the world first hand and to be able to see the international space station in all its glory (Well parts of it) being prepared for its launch.
Obviously if you are lucky enough to get to see the launch, this just adds to the excitement of your trip.
Its just a fascinating place to visit, and the area is beautiful too.
Its a great day out for ALL ages!
The tour bus is superb, they explain what all the buildings are, take you to the launch area, take you to the viewing area they use on launch days.
I would suggest that you watch Apollo 13
I just love this film, knowing that I have been there and seen what they returned to earth in!!
It sends tingles down my spine!
Good luck with your quest!
You could always go on your own and leave the outlaw sorry inlaw somewhere else.
Remember its your holiday too!!
You'll regret not going! TRUST ME!

Kennedy Space Center is now better than ever with well organised tours of the complex. If you lot have never got around to visiting, you must do so this time. I suggest that you plan to be there by 9am so that you can finish it by 4 pm and have a couple of hours for the nearby Astronauts Hall of Fame
But if your sister-in-law is set against it, why don't you drop her off at the Florida Mall on the way and pick her up on the way back? It will not be much of a deviation from your route. Some people are simply not into Space things and rather than force them to come and make everyone miserable, best to leave them to their own devices for the day. I know because my wife is a bit like that; she has been to KSC just once in our 5 visits and does not want to go back again.

I would agree with Nostromo there...why should she be forced to go somewhere where she is adament about not going, by the same token why take someone somwhere with you when it could put a damper on the day ? Ask where she would like to go and then drop her off.
Kennedy Space Centre is a fabulous place and it would be a shame if she missed it but then it would be her loss.:)

If she doesn't fancy shopping, take her to Cocoa beach or similar, where she can relax in the sun on the pier and watch the world go by.

I love anything to do with space.(my husband thinks I'm from another planet anyway)
I have been to the space centre many times, and took my boys there in May. They loved it. It was always a good day out and very interesting but it has got better. There are more things for little ones to do now and the tours are great. I agree with Nostromo, get there early, there is much more to see than you would imagine.
Before we had children Bry and I were the first in there one morning and the last to leave when it was closing. We had to do the Astronauts hall of fame the next day.
It really is a fantastic day out. I hope the shuttle gets back in space soon.

We not let your SIL have a free day to choose what she wants to do, the cabs are great & she can do just what she wants; soak up the sun, shop till she drops or do something else. You should go to the sapce centre it is great![msnwink]
I'm with Nostromo and Jolliffee. Let your SIL choose what she wants to do and either drop her off or order a cab for her. (There may be other members of your family party who would prefer to keep her company also - as the KSC is not to everyones taste, however most of the ladies I have spoken to who did go were found it a lot more interesting than they thought it would be).
Another suggestion would be to drop her off on International Drive and she could travel up and down the shops on the I-Trams.
I often suggest to my guests that if two families are sharing the holiday they get a car for each family as then everyone can do what they like doing best!

Absolutely. Some people assume that women are not interested in KSC and all men automatically are. This is far from the truth. My 10 year old niece is showing a great interest in Science, including astronomy, from an early age. Like Linda Allen, there are families where the women tend to be more 'spacey'. After all, both Mars and Venus are in space. :D
We're a bit disappointed as there was to be a shuttle launch during our holiday in January, but they've moved the launch date to the day we depart. I don't know what time the shuttle launch will be yet, but what would be the latest time we could safely get to the space coast, see the launch and get back to Orlando airport in time for our flight home (18.30). We are going to use Virgin's Downtown Disney check in on the morning.
As a large extended family we often holiday together - grandparents, two of their married daughters with husbands & kids (ranging from 6 to 16) and single daughter. We all enjoy slightly different things, have different levels of mobility & enjoy different ends of the day! The only way to really enjoy a holiday together & not come back hating each other is to agree to disagree & do your own thing - it has to be worked at but the benefits are tremendous! Have fun whatever you do !!:D
Fletch,
The next shuttle launch is not until May 12 - June 3. There is an Deep Impact/Delta II rocket launch on Jan 8 is that what you meant?

I first went when I was 21 and was bored stiff if the truth be known. However, I am going again in the next couple of weeks with Mr CDV and some friends as he has not been, I decided to give it another chance and see if age has improved my outlook on it all. I do remember doing the wildlife tour and that was good.

Thanks Paul (sorry, I meant to put rocket instead of shuttle).
There was a rocket launch scheduled around 13 January, which has been postponed until 27 January. Looks like we're in luck though, as the rocket launch on 8 January has been moved from end of December, so we should catch that one! I'm a happy bunny again now[clap][clap]

Merritt Island wildflife refuge may be another great place to leave the SIL whilst you do the Kennedy Tour, depends really on what she likes doing ....

In recent years they have changed the tour for Kennedy, and to be honest, when we went last year...I LOVED IT!!! I had been twice before, but it really wasn't my cup of tea at all, but we saw loads more last time, and the weather was of course great, so that helped! My daughter was 10 when we went and we had a really nice time!! We did factor in a trip to the 24 hr RonJon Surf Shop as well, it is open 24 hrs so you can add that to your excursion, as well as CoCoa Beach[8D]

I've seen two shuttles go up and thought the experience was awesome.
We have never been to the space Centre though-but with some of the positive experiences here-I think it's time we gave it a try.
If you sil is into gambling-you can put her on the 11am free Sterling Casino Cruise out of Port Canaveral. It's only a 5 hour cruise and gives you both time to do what you want.
Mum and I did the cruise in October-she loved the gambling and I enjoyed sitting out on the sun deck-sadly I missed the dolphins!
When we went we saw the launch, I have no interest in it, but I am glad that I have been there and done that. John enjoyed it all. The children got bored after half a day there, but we had to stay for the launch.
We didn't moan as everyone should have a chance to enjoy what they like. A bit of give and take never hurt anyone.:D As I happily repeated to John as we went to yet another mall.
Just explain that everyone else wants to go, so it is her decision as to what she would like to do with the day. (By herself)[}:)]

Aren't holiday's all about compromise when families are involved? We ususlly travel as a group with friends or family, and the families generally stick together. For example, I HATE water parks, but I always go with the family............. Hubby HATES shopping, but he always comes along...... We don't spend all our time with the other families or friends though, we all choose what we want to do, in our own group. If, once the kids are older, we want to do seperate things, then we will do so.
Compromise.......... It's the easiest way!

I agree, but 'compromise' can work both ways. My wife hates all theme parks except Sea World and we compromised by agreeing that she could do her own thing during the holiday - which usually meant shopping. This suited ME fine since I am not particularly fond of lengthy shopping trips (especially when it involves long spells of contemplation of the wallpaper patterns for me while the wife chooses her lingerie). So she visited every mall in town (and then some) while the rest of us enjoyed the parks. In the end, everybody was happy.:)[8D][8D]

Thanks for your help everyone, to be honest though I wasn't looking for alternative things for Dawn to do, I just didn't want her to miss out on something which I really think she would enjoy.
We used to work in the same shop together and did a bit of a tongue in cheek mini poll if whether people would want to see the Space Shuttle or not and most people thought it would be a once in a lifetime thing.
But if we were all the same the world would be a very boring place!!
I think I can safely say we all have at least one thing in common on this forum though[msnsmile2]

this is what i say to my lot!!! i dont want to spoil anyones fun, but if its not your cup of tea then your fun would be spoilt, then it would show and spoil their day......... get my drift??? i spent ages wandering around theme parks not that keen but then they moan when we do my thing and shop (well they normally do, this time the fellas did nearly more shopping then me, the 16 year old got annoyed with us shopping!!)
my choice was seaworld, and it didnt appeal to any of them, but when we went there they decided it was nearly one of their favourite things they had done in this holiday, we will do seaworld again, cos we all loved it!!!
you all go to KSC , and leave SIL at home with a good book and a good supply of drink be it tea or Baileys!!![msnwink]

With so many different things to see and do in Orlando and vicinity, nobody can 'see everything' in 3 weeks. The place is ideal for people with diffenet tastes and preferences to do their own thing once in a while at least. I still believe that Mrs D Smith should not be forced to go to KSC if it is not her cup of tea. I don't like any one trying to persuade me to do something that I don't like and would give the other person the same leeway. Otherwise, a holiday can become regimental and unpleasant to everyone.[8D]
