Not the usual pics you would expect for Las Vegas.
It snowed so much up in the mountains earlier in the week that people have been driving over from California to ski and snowboard in the fresh powder.

Brilliant photos Steve, we have been to Vegas several times but never to Mount Charleston. Another one for the list of places to visit.:)

Can you spot the mistake on the first pic. It's kind of a technical thing but it's there all right if you look closely.
Liz - Mt Charleston is a lovely place for a half day or day when you are back in Las Vegas. It's only about a 30 to 40 minute drive depending on the traffic. It can be something like 30 degrees cooler up on the mountain than it is in the town so it makes a welcome break from the heat if you are here in the summer. There are a bunch of really nice trails too ranging anywhere from a half hours walk to a full day's hike. It isn't normally under 3 feet of snow either - although they do get quite a bit of snow over winter. Not many people would think of going to Las Vegas in the winter to do a bit of skiing!!

Steve like you we love the national parks and next year we are returning to Yosemite for a longer stay. We are also going to take in 3 nights in Kings Canyon and Sequoia, have you been there? If so any recommendations?

the first photo, it seems a bit dark, or is that just me!

There's a bit of lens flare in the top right hand corner.
It's always a risk when shooting into the light rather than with it. You can usually avoid it with a bit of fiddling or a good lens hood. It's the first time I've used these asymetic lens hoods so I guess this wee tinker must have snook in through one of the corners. You live and learn!

I can see it now you point it out Steve, but even if I had noticed it I would have thought it was the moon ( sometimes you see it in the day don't you?)
I haven't been to either Kings Canyon or Sequoia yet Liz. Aren't there just too many interesting places in the world!! It's years and years since we went to Yosemite too.
We were quite lucky on our Yosemite trip as a friend from San Fran took us out there for a few days. We stayed in one of the tents they have, like a permanent campground, which was really cool hearing all the sounds and things all around each night.

Actually Steve, I quite like that first photo. It has an unusual 'near twilight' effect to it. I know it's cheating, but you can try playing around it in some photo editing software to increase the effect. What sort of light metering did you use?
Hi Nostromo,
The metering was the D70's 3D-matrix metering. It is proving itself to be very accurate, even for snow scenes where you'd normally have to overexpose a stop or so. I did a bracket on the Mt Charleston shot to make sure I got one that was absolutely spot on. The D70 has a really nifty little feature. Once you've taken the photo it displays it on the camera's display and you can ask it to highlight any areas that are over-exposed. It flashes them alternating black and white. If you are going for a really good shot you can use this to compensate the exposure until you get just to the point where the highlights aren't being burnt out.
