Only 9 more days and we're off. Have started to think about packing, and have just got flight bag out, which is a signal to start being excited. My must have's (apart from passports, air tickets) are....
Reading glasses
Reading material
Pen,paper (for endless list making of tasks & shopping).
Sweets,juice.
Perfume
Moisturizer.
What can you not travel without? Chloe

My hand luggage is like the tardis, I carry something to cover every eventuality. A throwback to travelling with young children I guess ;)

All the usual plus medications, painkillers, wet wipes, tissues, clean underwear, spare toothbrush+paste, socks, pillow, puzzle books, mags, reading book, cardigan/sweatshirt, chewing gum, sweets, ciggies, notebook and pen, villa brochures and cards.... ad infinitum [:I]

Everyone laughs at me until they need something I carry all the time :D

my must-haves after stuff like my asthma medication, passports ect are a bottle of water (bought at airport), something to tie my hair up with (gets terribly static during flights) and lip balm. Also take a book/puzzle book. Pen is essential for Visa Waiver forms.

OOoh also a spare pair of knickers in case my luggage goes astray[:I]

I take as little as possible, only carrying my handbag. I couldn't think of anything worse than carrying a great heavy bag round with me. Travel light, that's my motto.[msncool]

Travel size toiletries (incl moisturiser for the plane), wet wipes, tisuues, cameras, comb & brush, toothbrushes, maps, sunglasses, spare carrier bag, pens, ciggies, books, medications, and a bit of make up for that last visit to the loo before landing.

I've got that I'm sure I've forgotten something feeling just making out this list[msnscared]

Also, I bet it's not only me who does all the packing...by choice I must say. I have my method and don't like anyone to 'help'

A paperback, a small packet of moist tissues, a small box of mints and a small tube of men's dry skin cream. I get awfully dry on long haul flights; one of the reasons I hate 'em!

I get really dry as well..much more than the rest of my family. Someone has told me to drink pure water only for at least three days prior to the flight and plenty of it? do you know if this works anybody? Aren't there some airline staff in the forum who could give us some tips please.

I take two books and never read any! I took my lap top last time but couldnt open it on my knee. The space between me and the persons seat in front was too small... even when they werent reclining!!
I plan to take as little as possible - in my mind I have thoughts of my 6'' by 4'' handbag ha ha!! usually ending up with a large rucksack - :D

Absoulte essentials are:

some sucky sweets!! for take off (95% of which have been eaten before take off!! due to nerves) just about have one left at time of take off - have been known to ask others for one of theirs!!
and a bottle of water

Always carry my rescue remedy especially on night flights. If the person in front has the seat back and the lights are down I can sometimes wake up feeling a little bit claustrophobic and " panicky".
For the same reason I also carry a "vicks " nasal stick in case the air con is making me feel stuffed up and unable to breathe.
I sound like a bit of a whuss ...I'm not really, just like to be prepared! [msnwink]

So whats your rescue remedy - I also feel panicky and claustrophobic in the same circumstances......may need it!!!

Bachs Rescue Remedy, you buy it from the chemist, no prescription necessary, I usually get mine from Boots, you will find it with the herbal and homeopathic remedies, It's in a dropper type dispenser and you put it directly on your tongue but they have recently brought out a spray version. It says on the packaging "provides comfort in times of stress" and it works for me. Great to calm my nerves before an interview or if I have to give a presentation.
Give it a try you've nothing to lose except the cost..about £6.00

Drinking water does help a lot. On a plane we do get a bit salt concentrated because we lose more water in proportion to electrolytes. So pure water is good in this instance. (This is the opposite of dehydration due to diarrhoea and/or vomiting where we lose both water & salts and drinking pure water makes matters worse).

Do we have to declare medicines such as diazepam?? or night nurse?

I try to imagine being separated from my main luggage for the night and work backwards from that. I take ziploc clear plastic sealed bags in my flightbag separated for day and night use now and it really has saved rooting about looking for the item I want. I can add bags for edibles or entertainment stuff. I find that without doing that, no matter how organised I try to make my bag, searching it in a confined space is a real pain.

Everyone should have a limit of 1 carrier bag
This would make getting off the plane sooo much easier.
If you are at the back you have to watch whilst everyone gets their huge bags out of the overhead lockers.
Come on get a move on I want to walk and stretch my legs but no someone has had to put a bag 2 aisles backwards because their neighbours have used up all the space
Get a life folks - travel light.
