View Full Version : What I loved about the Gulf Coast

Time I got down to this before Andrew really has a go at me in earnest! I won't do a day by day but just my thoughts on what turned out to be an excellent holiday. To start was a bit traumatic - suffice to say the villa I had booked was unfinished - not that I knew it was still being built even - it was offered to me but I didn't know that it had not been verified on this site! However we were found another one at the last minute but it unsettled me greatly. We flew to Tampa - just love that airport and the ease at getting through immigration even though my replacement hips sent all the bells ringing yet again. Drove down to Rotonda West and arrived to pick up the key around 7 pm. Getting dusky and my heart sank as we drove on rough roads and unfinished buildings to our villa. All seemed well and we had a quick trip to Publix for the necessary to go with the duty free! Later to our horror we found a huge spider on the lanai - son wouldn't settle until he had nipped out to get a strong spray - which mother had to duly administer and finish off the beast! I was really tired and worried about our surroundings but next morning things seemed much better. Lovely big villa untouched largely by the hurricane, more than could be said for some around us - lawn sloped down to the river with huge bullrushes which I wished had been cut down a bit so I could see the passing gators! We saw beautiful birds in the surrounding trees and with no immediate neighbours all was peaceful. So the first day or two we got used to our surroundings and revelled in the warmth and the pool. I used to love sitting by the pool in the morning with a cuppa watching the sun come up over the trees and spread a lovely red glow everywhere.

Why people say there is nothing to do or see on the Gulf Coast I don't know. The wildlife was teeming. The raccoons frolicked on the bottom of the lawn - green backed turtles, herons, sand hill cranes abounded not to mention the wildlife indoors when I spotted another huge spider on the bathroom floor and the odd cockroach. We just loved the beaches. Stump Pass with its lovely shells and no people! Photographed a huge gopher turtle and saw big horseshoe crabs. Loved watching the fishermen with the pelicans hovering around them. The water was warm and inviting. There were lovely restaurants - we were awaiting our guests arrival and not being sure when they were visiting we hesitated to book a boat trip but I would have loved a trip out to sea. Fishermens Village at Punta Gorda must be so lovely when not ravaged by the hurricane but slowly getting on its feet and the houses seemed a sea of blue tarpaulined roofs. We loved old Venice with its decorated pigs on the sidewalks and quaint shops.

One of my highlights was a trip to Fort Myers. We lunched on the beach once we found somewhere to park! Not easy even in the off season. The beach was idyllic. Then we went on to Sanibel & Captiva Islands. Long been my dream to visit here and funnily enough I had built up a picture of Sanibel which bore no resemblance to the island itself. It was much more commercialised than I had expected - but then my dream to visit goes back many years and I never thought then that I would ever have the luck to be there. Captiva was lovely but again the hurricane had taken its toll. I swam and collected shells and could have spent forever. Must go back one day.

We ate at Mad Sams on 3 occasions - the dolphins showed up on our last night and I know have the photo on my desktop! The manatee didn't show himself though. Johnny Leverocks too was nice but very busy and it always amazes me how early people eat. By 9 pm the place was dead. We wanted to go to Rum Bay but time raced by. Naturally we had Breakfast at Tiffanys which was very busy - not anything special I thought. We spent a lot of the time driving around - I loved the sand at Siesta Key - it is cold to walk on and so fine and white, but that's the beach for the young and beautiful. Venice beach was another place we saw the dolphins.

Lisi,
would I?[}:)]
Great report, I think you really got to the heart of the place; nice and relaxed but more than enough to do. I always recommend a 2 centre holiday to friends who don't know Florida, so they can have the best of both worlds- the excitment and fun of Orlando and then more of the "real" Florida with a laid back time on the Gulf to really recharge the batteries.
Glad the villa worked out. With the canal and wildlife on view there's no rush or need to get out and about all the time.
Quite right about the shopping and the way my wife can shop I get down to the Gulf and away from the Millenia Mall etc in Orlando as soon as possible[msnsmile2]

Again glad you had such a good time,
andrew

Wish we could afford to buy a villa on the Gulf cost and then we could spend a week in Orlando and a week on the Gulf relaxing. We stayed in a villa at New Port Richey a few ywars ago and loved it. If we win the lottery, i'll be on the next plane and buy one.:D

Great report Lisi and glad you enjoyed several of our favourite places in and around Rotonda West. If you enjoy the natural Florida as you do it is a great place to see it. It always surprises people just how much there is to see and do on the Gulf Coast.

Sounds like you had a lovely time, and appreciated what the area had to offer. We like going to the Gulf coast, as a complete contrast to the joys of Orlando. We are going to Clearwater Beach for a couple of days when we are over in Dec. althoug really this time the trip over is to make sure the villa is 100% after the hurricane repairs. Chloe

You found all my favourites Lisi and although I never thought I would say it, I love the Gulf coast just as much as Orlando, and just have to pay the area a visit every trip:)

Lisi - Prime (or is it Premium) Outlets at Ellenton are good for shopping. About a 20 - 25 minute drive from Sarasota.

I agree Julie. Prime Outlets are great - have bought plenty of clothes, trainers, beautiful towels and linen for home. The day after Christmas is great for Sales if you don't mind the crush.

Lovely report Lisi, you've really made me want to go and take a long look. Have only been to Clearwater, St. Petes and Tarpon springs so far, so I know that I have a lot of Gulf exploration to do. I just love the Florida wildlife, so am going to have to see about renting a villa down on the Gulf in the next year or so. [msnsmile2][msnsmile2]

The outlet mall at Estero, Fort Myers is also good for shopping. See this link for stores http://www.miromar.com/florida.html
Looking for the link I have also discovered the Teco Arena nearby (home of the Florida Everblades Ice Hockey team) http://www.tecoarena.com/
After several years of visiting the gulf coast I can not believe we have not seen it before but then ice-hockey is not a sport you associate with Florida.

Glad you all enjoyed the report such as it wsa. I think I meant the Prime Outlets at Ellenton - about an hour up from Port Charlotte - I still didn't think they were as good as Orlando - mind you I wished I had bought the leather jacket I was dithering about - too late now! I think that day was the only day it rained (tropical storm Matthew hit us) and it just fell down so the day was a bit miserable. There just never seemed enough time to pack everything in. I am glad everyone else loves the Gulf Coast too - I was so unsure as this site does favour the Orlando area and I never seemed to find many reports on the Port Charlotte area but Mo and Andrew were so helpful before I went - let's hope people now will want to visit the area more now. I am hoping to win the lottery this weekend - so will definitely be buying a villa - just wait and see!![sporty][clap]

I'm sitting on the balcony of a condo on Sanibel Island looking out onto the white sand of the beach and the warm azure Gulf. Pretty busy because it's Thanksgiving today - only got about 200 yards of beach each. This is a magical place!!!!!!!!!!

If you decide to go find out what time the day trip rom south sea resort leaves and time your trip for the same time, keep them on the horizon and you cant go wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When we picked up our boat they asked had we any boating experience... when we replied we had crewed a narrow boat on the canal they werent sure what we meant!!!! but when we returned without incident they were obvoiusly taking bets that we would radio SOS!!!!!!!!! ACTUALLY WE WERE WELL OUT INTO THE BAY WHEN i REALISED MY MOBLIE PHONE WAS IN THE VILLA!!![clap][clap][clap]
