View Full Version : Christmas Markets
I'm hoping to take my Mum and Dad on a long weekend trip before Christmas to one of the european Christmas markets.
Trouble is I don't really know whoch one to choose! I don't mind whether it's flying or on the Eurostar but would prefer somewhere that is quite flat as dad gets very breathless walking up hills.
Any ideas would be appreciated[msnsmile2]
Staying in England, does anyone know what the St. Nicholas Fair(hope i've got the name correct) in York is like?

My Mum and her friends went to that one last year, they all enjoyed it very much.
Also York is a very nice place to.
I know the Christmas market in Prague is wonderful [clap][clap]A friend of mind did that one last year, and couldn't praise it enough.

Koln is one of the best ones I have been to. Dusseldorf is my favourite though, although I am lucky enough to live there. They are all pretty good and so festive. OOH Gluewein....[drinkbeer][drinkbeer][drinkbeer][drinkbeer]

In general, Christmas (or Weinacht, as the locals call it), is far far better in Germany than it is here in the UK. We are way too overcommercialised and very little else. I once spent Christmas in a Bavarian village called Lindau on the shores of Lake Konstanz. It was absolutely wonderful. :):):):)

Bruges - they do a nice market and it is alovely place. eurostar to brussels then change for Bruges, you do not want to take a car ther as it is all 1 way streets!!
Fantastic atmosphere, ice rink in the middle of the square, fantastic

We have done both Cologne and Koblenz and they were both great. we travelled with a coach firm all the way and they took us to the markets so very little walking.
If you are going to visit Bruges which is a wonderful city you should definitely buy some chocolate - it is superb.

just wanted to mention my dad comes from Dusseldorf! poor old soul hasnt been there since the war!

Yes it's funny how the thought of Belguim chocolate suddenly made my 16 year old daughter show an interest in coming with us[msnsmile2]

i was watching a travel programme on sky this week and saw some lovely deals for 1,2, and 3 day breaks at christmas markets in Prague, cologne and am sure they showed Amsterdam? think thats what they said!

cologne is on my list to do with my sister one day.....
I am very lucky to have been to most of the European Christmas markets - one of the perks of being cabin crew for 20 years!
I must admit the German ones are my favourite and Prague is special too!

Oh just back from our local Christmas market and my head is in a spin! Had copious amounts of Gluhwein and Eirliqour, lots of lovely food and I am ready for bed and it is ony 6 o'clock! Got to fight it though it is the X factor tonight!!! Sad I know!
I used to love flying into Frankfurt and dusseldorf aiports at christmas. They used to make such and effort with stalls etc, do they still do this? Wondering because of security these days.
I used to like the shops under Frankfurt airport, used to buy loads while waiting for the flight. Once bought a six foot bear, they let me take him as hand luggage and BA upgraded us to first and they gave us a seat each.:D

The stalls are not around in Dusseldorf airport, I am not sure about Frankfurt as it is 12 years since I have flewn from there.
Dusseldorf Xmas market is fabulous, there was a story on the news during the week which made me laugh. Dusseldorf is twinned with Lillehammer and this lady had a tree in her garden which had been there since she was a wee girl and it was overpowereing the garden so she said she would donate it to Dusseldorf.
It is now in pride of place at the Christams market here and they had a big ceremony to light it and she was there with the Bergmeister (Mayor). He Said the speech, she was crying, and then he said don't worry after the holidays we will give it a good fire...........who says Germans don't have a sense of humour!
