I have a problem; basically I need to write in word & then cut and paste into the forum or wherever. Since moving from IE to Opera, though I have noticed this problem with other users. I have found that when I use the apostrophe '; which I do use a lot. Since that's an easy way I've developed of communicating. I find the apostrophe has been changed it looks different, and when posted into a forum, some weird character has replaced it, maybe the actual asci code. Though if I over type it (like I have done in this post) the new look apostrophe works fine so it is in the translation of the cut a paste from and to.

Here is an example of the problem:
Currently as a freelancer I#8217;m able to take holiday when I want (I don#8217;t get paid when I don#8217;t work) but heaven forbid I get a new contract that I have to plan when I#8217;m away!

Is this a page encoding problem in this forums code? I have Windows 1252 as default, and Windows-1252 is an extension of ISO-8859-1. If a page actually is ISO-8859-1, it will render the same under Windows-1252. In addition, many pages claim to use ISO-8859-1 but actually include characters not available in that encoding. So if you've set your default encoding (under Preferences, Langauges) as Windows-1252, or also perhaps if Opera sees a character on the page which isn't available in ISO-8859-1, then it will use Windows-1252 when ISO-8859-1 is requested.

Characters between 128 and 159 are not available in ISO-8859-1. This includes things like the euro symbol, em dash and directional - as in left or right - quotes. Many pages will use the right single quote in place of apostrophe because it just looks nicer - but it isn't available in ISO-8859-1.

I am using word 2003 on XP sp2 and Opera 7.54

What do you think, other than stop using Opera?

Have you tried using Notepad and then copying and pasting?

A great use for the forum badword filter. I just added the HTML code for the apostrophe you were using and told it to replace it by a ' and it works perfectly. Your message above now displays as it should do [msnsmile2]
