Now I know this is not a Florida question so if removed I know why,
Can anyone tell me/ or have they been to Las Vegas around Xmas, we were thinking of going for a week, but the weather charts look cool, however I have been told by a Vegas rep that it is warm during the day and cold at night, any info appreciated.
BMI are doing a trial so I have heard flying direct from Manchester Oh how I wish it was direct to Florida!!
Thank you

We went to Las Vegas for Millenium New Years celebration. We started out in suits but were soon in shirtsleeves as the street party started. It is never 'cool' in LV except in AC rooms, particularly for the Brits. You might want a windbreaker for the night but certainly not more.

Haven't been at Christmas but can't imagine that it would be cold in the day. In the heat of the summer its really too hot to be outside for too long. Should imagine that it would be quite pleasant in December.[msnsmile2]

Yes we thought it would be nice, we have been in the summer and it is too hot so we thought this we be a good time to have a break and we the Direct flight and the cheap hotel rooms!!!! I just did not want to swap one cold place for another if you know what I mean, mind you our son age 8 says I want to be home for Christmas whereas we would not- ha ha.[msnsmile]

We got married in Las Vegas beginning on January 2001. I was not warm but it was not freeezing cold either.

Its reasonably cool, around 60f max so you would expect to take a couple of jumpers - it can also be pretty wet. If you thinking of going further out to the Grand Canyon, definately wrap up as it can be very cold and snowing there on the canyon floor in December.

Mind you, when we went it was Millenium Eve and the weather was probably artificially warmed up by the massive crowds and all those lights and fireworks. Anyway, by midnight we would not have bothered if it was twenty below zero. ;);)

Was there Jan 5-9 last year. Warm enough during the day coldish at night but I was in a dress one night and didn't freeze - alcohol helped of course. needed a jacket the first night when at outdoor party for event the conference I wa at had.
Kind of like a nice autumn day at home.

We went on December 4th for 7 nights and it was a good temperature during the day, shorts and T-shirts but you certainly needed a jumper or light jacket at night as the temperature dropped quite a bit

I lived in Vegas for 4 years. December nights are cold. At least cold by Nevada standards. You'll need a jacket. The daytime temps are around 50-70. No super hot days but good enough to play in the pool. You'll see alot of snow on the mountains. The snow level falls to around 3000' in the winter. Vegas is around 2200'asl. Especially Mt. Charleston. But don't let that put you off. There's a lodge up there well worth the drive.
How are you getting there? Southwest Airlines have some super cheap fares right now from most US Gateway cities.
Have fun.

In dec it will be cold at night and warmish during the day. If you travel out of LV you can actually ski in the winter. How cool is that!!

Loved the slot machines in the Casinos, especially as I won $375 on one, took the money and ran. We weren't exactly gambling mad, think we spent about $50 between 2 of us in a week. My favourtie hotel had to be Caesars Palace, absolutely amazing.[msnsmile2]

Without the slightest doubt, Caesar's Palace is the best Hotel / Casino in Las Vegas and it will be very hard to beat. The Mirage comes a close second though. I found Bellagio and The Venetian too uppity for LV's informal setting, lacking the 'vibe' of the other two ( and Rio, which I would put third on my 'best in LV' list).

I often wondered; in terms of today's real estate value, how would Las Vegas' 'Strip' compare with, say, WDW property in Orlando? (If we theoretically assume that The Strip is owned by a single organisation like Disney) Anybody have any idea?

Wouldn't like to hazard a guess as to the value of "The Strip" must be worth an absolute fortune.[msnoo]

Rio does a great breakfast buffet!! Have to disagree about Bellagio, we have stayed there and at Caesars and thought Bellagio was much nicer especially rooms and pool area. Caesars did "bump" us on our first reserved night in favour of conference delegates paying big bucks for room rates. They sent us to a suite in the Luxor, room was great but I found the hotel too dark. WE have stayed at MGM and New York New York as well but Bellagio is still my favourite.

Don't gey me wrong; Bellagio is a nice Hotel and the Dancing Fountains outside are very good. But the reason I would not say there is partly personal. The Italian Village theme does nothing for me while something like the Polynesian setting of The Mirage or the Hot Latin theme of Rio strikes the right chords.

Bellagio and The Venetian are too much grandeur with less colourful life which one would expect on a visit to Las Vegas. Those two would be wonderful somewhere like New York or San Francisco, but in LV I would prefer something more lively where I can let my hair down and be merry. That is where Caesar's Palace scores over the others - start with their incomparable Forum Shopping Arcade with its 'Night for Day' theme.

Their cration of a night sky during the day and vice versa is very imaginative. The 'sky' looks more realistic than even the one at Mexico pavilion of Epcot.

The ceiling with the changing light, you believe you are out doors don't you. Also in Aladdin there is an Italian restaurant which makes you believe you are dining outside, you have to keep telling yourself you are INSIDE an enormous hotel!!!:D

We love the Forum at Caesars, I haven't seen the new Aladdin (we were there on the night that it opened, but getting on a flight home at 6pm when it opened at 7pm[msncry]), but the Forum ceiling is much more effective than the shopping plaza at the Venetian. I feel that the Venetian St Mark's Square is just too big and it makes it very echoey (sp?) and therefore the illusion is destroyed.

Our favourite hotel is the Monte Carlo. It is a little smaller (only three thousand rooms if memory serves correct) and feels a little more personal, plus it has a microbrewery in it! One good thing about while you are gaming there is that you can have the microbrewed beers as your complementary drinks (so I am realibly informed[msnwink]).

As far as property values I was under the impression that the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard ("The Strip") and Tropicana Avenue is the highest valued intersection in at least the US, if not the world.

Mrs MTP finds that even during the Summer she needs to have something warmer to wear in the evenings for while on the casin floors due to the air-conditioning (do you think they keep it coolish with a high oxygen content on purpose?).

We are hoping to do a 7-10 night break in Vegas next year (without kids) to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. We first encountered las Vegas during our honeymoon when we were travelling coast to coast on Amtrack. Our last trip was four years ago and it was what spurred us to book our first Florida holiday (perhaps a little guilt for leaving our daughter for a week). For those that can't wait to see Vegas again try out www.lasvegas360.com.

Don't forget that, like Florida, there is a whole load of other wonderous things around Vegas, Nevada and on into Arizona that are well worth seeing and not too far away.

If you are going to go to Vegas and you do wish to gamble then please allocate a gaming budget which are happy to loose and stick to it. It is quite scary and saddening to watch what some people lose. We feel that what we have spent on gambling in an evening is no more or less that we would have spent on drinks/entertainment and a lot of that is complementary in Vegas (even just the people watching!).

I forgot, I forgot ... Las Vegas is a great city for upgrades.

At the Rio Hotel we were upgraded in our room. At check-in I asked if our room had a jacuzzi and the clerk said that it didn't. I said not to worry, just a friend had stayed at the Rio and had had a really nice room with a jacuzzi. The clerk tapped away at the keyboard and then looked up and said "Do you mind being upgraded for one night?" (we were staying for three), we said no. She then said "I think you will like this room, something to tell your friend". What a room! The Rio has got a new tower that is kidney shaped (or was new-ish then) the room we had was on the twentysomethingth floor and was at one end of the floor. The end room was a suite which was semi-cirular (as it is at one tip of the kidney shape) and had 180 degree ceiling to floor windows. It was huge - lounge, kitchen, dining area, bedroom, huge bathroom with steam shower and jacuzzi by the window. For $79+tax!

We have also been upgraded twice at the Monte Carlo to the concierge floor. The rooms are the same, but there is a suite where during the day there is a mini-buffet of fresh fruits, juices, cheeses and meats (a bit like a continental breakfast), then in the evening it switches to wine and nibbles. For $49+tax.

Las Vegas is a town where tipping can also work well (I know this has been heatedly debated before on the forums), during the likes of Comdex there are a lot of people in town on company expense accounts where tipping can be minimal, therefore tipping is very warmly received and gets you an excellent level of service.

[/quote]

Las Vegas is now far more family friendly than it used to be. There will be quite a lot to do for your kids. Obviously, some places are more kid-friendly than others and you will have to check individually.

For a start MGM Grand is probably the most family orientated casino/resort, with New York, New York and The Stratosphere not far behind. As for the shows, you will have to check closer to the time of your visit; most of them specify if they are suitable for kids or otherwise. If in doubt, you can always ask before booking (which is usually necessary for popular shows). For exanple, the sadly discontinued (due to Roy's accident) Siegfried & Roy is probably the greatest show ever hosted in LV and 100% suitable for kids. Your kids will also love the Star Trek Experience at the LV Hilton.

I think 4 or 5 days is enough at Las Vegas per se. Irrespective of where you are staying, you can visit any Casino, even if it is 'just to see'. So, it is best to start at one end of the strip and work your way slowly to the other, reserving a day & night to "Glitter Gulch" downtown. The 'Fremont Street Experience' there is another attraction which everyone will enjoy.

Always carry a lot of water and take it slowly. Walking distances in Las Vegas are very misleading and places are always much further away than it appears at first glance.

But you do need to keep 10 days for the full visit to the area. This is because Las Vegas is the ideal jump-off point to the greatest natural attraction in the world - Grand Canyon. There is a flight between the two places - or you can do the drive. Driving is better because it allows you to visit the Canyon's North Rim, a totally different and in some ways much better experience. Two nights at each rim would be ideal.

Hope this helps.

We went for a week to Vegas the week before xmas last year. As has already been said, the weather was ok during the day but cooler at night. We stayed in the Aladdin. Fantastic hotel with a lovely shopping arcade.

However, we had our 3 kids with us and half way thru the week the were starting to get bored. They didn't want to go to the Grand Canyon, so apart from the shopping and walking round all the lovely hotels on the strip there was not much for them to do. I would not take them back with us if we were to go again. If they even lingered for a few seconds in the casinos, security were right on them and they were told to move on.

A great hotel if you do have children is the Circus Circus at the far end of the strip. Apart from the circus, there is a massive arcade and a mini theme park. However, the rooms in this hotel are pretty basic compared to the other hotels and it does look a bit run down. But apart from that, our lot did enjoy it and we came home with loads of cuddly toys they had won. It was good also because we could leave them to play in the arcade while we had a go on the slots. You could only do this with older children though.

Certainly a great place to see. All the hotels were great. I spent ages looking for a hotel and the reason we picked the Aladdin was that the rooms had computers in them, as we needed access to the internet.

Ray&Sarah
19-09-2004, 15:09
We stayed at Circus Circus and our boys were well catered for with the Theme Park, allowing us to use the slot machines, as Arlene says they were soon moved on if they loitered anywhere near the slot machines.

As to the rooms being a bit basic, we can't compare it with other LV hotels as we haven't stayed in any, if we go back we will definately stay at Caesars Palace and probably not take the boys. However when we compare it to the hotel that we stayed in when we moved onto LA, Circus Circus was the lap of luxury![msnwink]:D

Yes LV is a place for kids. We have been twice now and our kids were younger the first time and teenagers the second. You cannot expect to get much gambling done, if that is your thing, as the kids are not allowed to linger in the Casinos, but there is so much else to do. Everyone should have a trip to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam at least once in their life, and there are lots of other fun things to do, such as indoor theme park at Cirus Circus, highest ride in the world on the Stratosphere etc.

Just make the trip to LV be one to add on to a longer trip. I would not stay there more than 4 days with kids.

Sue

Just get your flights to Orlando perhaps with a stop over in New York.
Then its really easy and cheap to fly return to Vegas. We went in Feb. last year and paid £180 for direct flights and 3 nights in the Golden Nugget. As for the weather it was down to freezing in the day and below in the evenings.

Hey Ravtino,

Did you try Continental? I'm pretty sure you could do an open jawed return Man->New York->San Fran and then Orlando->New York->Man.

This gives you New York either on your way out or on your way back.

All you then need is a San Fran->Las Vegas->Orlando. I'd be amazed if you couldn't put this together with American or South West. I'm sure we've flown Las Vegas direct to Orlando in the past with either of these airlines.

Why not also consider a road trip from San Francisco to Las Vegas. It's a long day's drive (longer if you decide to swing by Yosemite for a night or two) but you go through some fabulous scenary. It's also great driving into Las Vegas after the sun has set. You see the glow on the horizon from about 30 miles away and it slowly gets brighter and brighter the closer you get.

I haven't staid at Mandalay Ceri but when we've been down there for a meal it just doesn't quite seem to work. It tries to be a top notch contender but it doesn't seem to gel the way the likes of Bellagio do. It's also way down the south end of the strip. If you want the best that Las Vegas has to offer then I do think it's a coin toss between Bellagio and Venice depending on personal taste. Haven't had a chance to see the new Wynn place yet but I'm sure it's also gorgeous. My personal fave is still The Mirage.

Its well worth upgrading to a lake view room if you can afford it as the views specially at night are amazing.

We have rented a villa, apparently over 5000 sq ft! I think we will all probably lose each other in the villa. We stayed in another villa last November and it was fantastic. Where is the problem? You can get to Las Vegas with 1 stop from Manchester with a number of airlines and arrive (their time) around 5.00 pm. From there you can fly to Fort Myers with another stop and the same home via New York. I did a similar trip a couple of months ago.

Hve you tried going to Expedia and entering your route under multi-trip? It will give you several options.

Incidentally, there is no direct UK-Fort Myers service so you will have to take at least 1 stop to get there and many of the routings require more stops and even an overnight.

I have flown to Fort Myers many times and on many routes (I'm doing so later this week). If you want to DM me I'll let you know the best options.

We are planning on spending 3 days in Vegas next April before going to our villa in Orlando. In your experiences is it best to book direct with the hotels or one of the many online websites. Also is it best to book excursions after arrival or before you go eg: Grsnd Canyon flight. Appreciate any advice anyone can offer. Many thanks.

We booked our Grand Canyon trip, by plane, over the internet, very simple and saved worrying that they might not be able to accomodate us, especially if you only have a few days there.
We are planning to do a combo trip next year, Chicago, LV & Our villa, going to book it all over the net. Having done a similar thing last year, just different destinations, I feel more confident about doing it.[msnsmile2]

The Best Advice I Can Offer Regarding Hotels Is To Go To The Various Hotels Own Website And Join Their E.mail List And You Will Then Receive E.mail Offers Which Are Often Cheaper Than You Will Find Anywhere Else.

As Of Tours I Have Done Many Over The Past 2 Years Including 4 To The Grand Canyon And Every Single Time I Booked Before I Got There And Have Not Had Any Problems At all.

I Used A Company Called "LookTours" And Have Always Been Very Happy With Them And Their Prices.

Thank you for the advice and tips. I will have a look at "Look Tours" and register with a few hotels we like the look off. Aladdin seems to have the best prices for our dates at the moment.

Booked through Expedia Dec 7 to Dec 14 staying at the New York New York Hotel and flying direct with Virgin at a cost of £558, which seems a really good price. Have also been advized to book Canyon flights when in Vegas. Can,t wait

You lucky people...did you just book the flight or the hotel as well, and if so where are you staying?

April is a good time of the year to go as its around 80* most days so not to hot or to cold:D
