View Full Version : Keep the garage door closed!

Just as you would at home, when you're not using the garage, keep the door closed. Not only does this make you more secure when you're indoors and the home more secure when you go out, but some home communities have regulations that garage doors must be closed at all times unless you're using the garage.

That's a good point Blott. We briefly stopped at our villa yesterday and I found the garage door on the latch, meaning that anyone could open it from the outside .

We've had our Management Company fit stops on the garage door rails so that it cannot be opened at all as I don't want to run the risk of other guests leaving it totally unlocked.

Also never to exit out the garage door way with the double lock bolt, as you will not be able to get back in the house and could be charged $50 + to call a lock smith.
I know at Chatham Park you can not leave the garage door open unless you are in it or using it.

This sounds like you have a blind sided deadbolt. These are frowned upon by the fire dept. If you had a keyed deadbolt then there is no need to call the locksmith when someone locks themselves out.

We to have a lock like Patti's and have warnings up to say don't exit any other way than the front door, didn't know this was frowned upon.

Also, have I dreamt this or is it true that you can't reverse onto your drive and can't park on the road?

Our home owners associations regulations prohibit the garage door being open at any time other than when a car is entering or exiting. Apparently, it is to preserve the appearance of the estate as people do not wish to look inside other peoples messy garages. We can be fined $25 for non compliance. The guests are warned about this.

We quite often use the garage to exit our homes and never have any problems going back in the same way - you just have to lock the garage door in the same way you would lock the front door - we like doing this in the evening especially as you seem to let less bugs in the house, they always seem to be hovering round the porch light just waiting for you to open the door

Problem with leaving via the garage if you have a security alarm is that the door from the home to the garage is not a designated exit door so it's important to leave via the front door.

At Crescent Lakes you're not allowed to park on the road overnight and they don't allow RVs, commercial vehicles, etc to park anywhere overnight! Can't speak for other communities and I've not heard the one about not reversing into the drive before although reversing into car park bays at public car parks is mentioned in notices in some. Only thing about reversing into the driveway is, if you leave the vehicle on the driveway instead of in the garage, when you start it up, the garage doors tend to get covered in black exhaust marks!

We have alarms on both homes and they both have the door from the garage into the house as designated exits - so we don't have any problems

We have the same rules blott in Chatham park. No parking on the street, no trucks or Rvs (you can park these at the park though) and you cannot have no cars with advertisement written on them.
Also we do not give keys to garage so we specifically say to not go out the garage door. People tend to loose or foget keys and then....

Our neighbour across the road from our home is a permanent resident, and their garage is permanently open. Just like ours at home, full of junk. I don't think they can get a car in theirs.

Our opposite neighbours are US residents although not permanently resident at Esprit they are there as often as they can. Their children use the garage - doors wide open - to hang out. I know Esprit has a rule against this but it seems to be selectively applied!
