Both my wife and myself are visiting Orlando for the 6th time. We usually spend 2 to 3 days visiting an area to break up the holiday and this is usually as a surprise for my wife Sarah. In the past we have been to Naples and Marco Island, Key West, St Augustine and Cape Canaveral to name a few. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of where to visit? This has to be within reasonable driving distance that is really special to see?

Thanks

Mel

You don't say what time of year you are going but Mount Dora is gorgeous at anytime. We really love the boat trip on the lake and through the canal. It's like stepping back in time and the wildlife is amazing.

Crystal River is great in spring and you can swim with the manatees. Homossassa Springs are in the same area and again it doesn't matter when you go.

I'm sure others will have other suggestions. Have a great time.

It depends what 'turns you on'. We visited the Ringling Museum late last year - stayed on Anna Maria Island (laid back !!). Ca d'Zan has to be seen to be believed & we've never been to an art exhibition with such an extensive range of galleries...Takes a day to visit the whole site... There was a pretty decent restaurant too....

What about Manasota Key on the Gulf coast its lovely, very natural and has a beautiful beach. Takes around 2.5 hours to drive there. Andrew will give you more info on the area as he has a villa there. Andrew, where are you?

Also, another favourite of ours is Sanibel Island. Approx. 3.5 hour drive. Gill

We went to St Augustine-quite a lot of history to it, quaint almost for the States and well worth a 2/3 day visit. The accommodation we stayed in was Spanish/Colonial in style and at 4pm every day we wwere invited to drinks and cake by the owners-very nice! Ooops just noticed you've already been-sorry!

Sanibel every time for me!! I love it. We usually visit in December, but I can imagine it would be lovely in September. There are loads of good restaurants, fantastic beaches, and a great laid-back atmosphere. I love looking around Bailies General Store, picking up a snack and a great coffee and finding a good spot on one of the beaches for a few hours until sunset. I feel I haven't been to Florida without a good sunset at Sanibel or Captiva. Then its off to Matzaluna, an Italian restaurant on Sanibel, great food and full of friendly locals. However, you are not far from Fort Myers and the good shopping, etc.

Hi Mel

How about the Everglades National Park? I found this quote:

The Everglades and the Ten Thousand Islands is a rare and beautiful place. It is one of North America's unsung wild places - a beautiful, rugged, subtropical landscape experienced by a relatively few adventurous souls each year.

There are many and varied activities that you can do here, especially over 2-3 days.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. The overall majority seem to favour Sanibel Island. I shall now have to look this up and see where it is, where to stay and what to do. Anybody who's been there any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks again.

For something a bit different, give some consideration to a Florida dude ranch. Horses, trail riding, great accomodations, meals, etc. There are several in Florida, one of the better is over near Lake Wales in a small town called River Ranch. Google it to see if it appeals to you.

Wow, this has given me lots of idea's of where to visit. It's a good job that we are regular visitors to Florida. This is the only way we will get to see all of the places suggested. I have decided to take Nina's advice and visit Mount Dora for a couple of days. We are also going over to clearwater for a day also - See if my nerves can stand the ride on the Sea Screamer? I will save Sanibel & Captiva for my next visit to Orlando.
