Hi all,

Just thought I'd take the time to post this up during our honeymoon (which we're having an amazing time!! Report to follow)

As of May 1st Walmart are no longer accepting VISA travellers cheques....only American Express!! We used our visa ones up till then but then the lady said they had an update on the tills and now only take Amex ones! I checked this with cust services and they confirmed this. We have a mixture of both so not a problem for us. Everywhere else is fine so not sure why Walmart have taken this step!

Just a heads up for all that may have Visa ones.

Anyway.... 5 days left here and are having a fab time. Weather is excellent!! Mid 80s. Off to Boardwalk in a mo for a meal.

Will post up pigs of wedding and trip when we get back.

Clayton, Pippa & Heather

Thanks for letting us know. Haven't got round to buying any T/C's yet, but useful to know.

Congratulations to you both on your wedding.

Glad you're having a fantastic time and look forward to reading your trip reports and seeing your photos.

Ali

Even better than Travellers Cheques is a new card that the Post Office has and is accepted everywhere, you put whatever amount of money you want on the card and you can use this like a Credit Card, but can only use what you put on the card!

You have to read the T&Cs of all these cards carefully to ensure that even though you are using your money you arent getting hidden charges.
Going Places do one which is an Electron card and lots of places ownt take that (they wont even take it themselves.)
The Amex one chargs you ro reload and if you dont use it all up by the time it expires then you either have to pay to renew it or if you take the balance back they charge you a handling fee.
Some of them also charge you a transaction fee when you use it as well.

I guess the reason Walmart are only taking the AMEX ones is that maybe Visa have put up the cost to them to process them or soomething. You can guarantee when decisions like this are made it is 99% because of commercial reasons as they would prefer to take as much money as possible from whatever source.

the post office card is also an electron card and is good for drawing cash from ATM's but not so good for Using in shops or restaurants because a lot of places will not except the electron card

I see, I did not look into it, the lady in the post offive just mentioned it to me as she knows we go to Florida quite a bit, but if places wont take the travellers cheques, I think using the ATM would be the best option.

My sister in law took one last year when she went to Florida, and she said it was great for drawing cash from the ATM’s and that was it
The big problem with the electron card is it will always require online authorization and funds are checked for each and every transaction

The post office say vey little about using the card to make purchases and tend to push the fact that you can use thousands of ATM’s worldwide

If you want a prepaid card that you can use for purchases then look for one of the cards with the MasterCard logo on them they will be more widely excepted than and electron card, and if you want a prepaid card for use in the US it may be worth looking at a FairFX card
