LONDON (Reuters) - A senior American Airlines executive said on Tuesday that London's Heathrow was the worst airport used by the company in Europe.

Don Langford, head of customer services Europe for the airline, said its base at Terminal 3 had suffered from a lack of investment and was "a bit of a dump".

"I would have to say that Heathrow is in many ways the worst of all the airports that my company flies to in Europe," he told the BBC.

The damning verdict comes a month after the opening of Heathrow's new Terminal 5 building descended into chaos, with hundreds of flights cancelled and baggage lost.

No comment was immediately obtainable from Heathrow's operator, BAA.

I disagree. Flew into terminal 5 from Edinburgh last week and I was really impressed with it. Heathrow may be bad, but Dublin gets my vote for this award. Filthy and depressing.

I think LA is the worst airport I have been to albeit 10 years ago.

I think I would have to agree with that we absolutely hate Heathrow!

Have American Airlines stop flying to New York then?

I was not impressed when we flew into Heathrow back in January. It took ages to get through immigration and the staff would benefit from lessons at the Disney charm school it then took another hour to get our luggage (still I suppose we did get it the same day). This could be why we are trying the American Airlines route Stansted to JFK and on to Raleigh/Durham tomorrow plus we live very near Stansted.

We went to Stansted to check in as American do not allow international flights to check in on line. I queried why and was told because I could be a terrorist and could put a bomb on a plane, and the only way to find out was to get people to check in personally! Unfortunately we were delayed for 1 hour as the flight was late coming in from New York. We took off promptly at 11.15 and arrived only 30 minutes late. The only thing I did not like was it was not seat back TVs so there was no choice of films. Immigration was the easiest we have encountered and the process was very quick and harmless - think they had all had lessons from Disney on queue management and manners. The connection was okay as well and we will definitely go this way again.

I must admit I am not a fan of Heathrow Airport. I much prefer Gatwick or Manchester. I always feel that the older terminals seem very small for the amount of people they service. I have been in there before and the air-con system was broken and it was awful.

I am also not a fan of circling the airport 5 times before you come into land. That stack system is terrible.

I think once terminal 5 gets rid of the teething problems it will be a much better experience. Maybe they need another runway?

Is it easy to get from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 at Heathrow? Our son is flying out of T1 on the same day as we fly out of T3. The plan at the moment is to drop him off first and then make our way to T3. Just wondered how much time we should allow.

Only used Heathrow once as we live in the north but didn't have any complaints.

The worst airport we have been to is in Bulgaria at a place called plovdiv, we went Skiing one year. It used to be a Bulgarian Army Base but the Baggage conveyer belt was only 10m long so you can imagine the pile of suitcases at the end.
