I've just booked a 4 door compact with Dollar at MCO and wondered if anyone knows what cars they are using in this category. Is it likely to be a Dodge caliber?

There is a good chance of a Caliber in this category. Please see http://www.uscarhire.co.uk/CarTypes.aspx for more information.

We booked a compact car this April and we had a Caliber, although our friends who came with us had big 4x4 and they called him "Miss Daisy". It was a lovely car and it suited us perfectly, enough room in the boot and it didn't take loads to fill up. We did book a 2 door but we got a 4 door, so that was a bonus.

We booked an Intermediate and were given a PT Cruiser which we didn't accept as it is a Compact.

The PT cruiser is an Intermediate. In the case above they had a free upgrade.

I was with my brother in law when he picked up his car (booked on here) at the dollar on 192, and the woman said "we only have the 1 compact left at the moment" she was refering to the PT cruiser!!!!

I guess they didn't have any compacts, so had to allocate the Intermediate, and didn't feel the need to explain they were giving a free upgrade, but it's definately in the Intermediate category.

Do they really rate a PT as higher than a Caliber? (more of a thinking in my head question than questioning you Roger)

I would have thought they were both the same size and standard!

I have a PT and i don't think its any better than a caliber, which i have also rented.

Is it something to do with the PT been more popular?

The staff whp patrol the car park at Dollar told us it wasn't and said it was definately a Compact.

I cannot believe a PT Cruiser could be classed as an Intermediate, its tiny!
The car we were then given was a Chrysler Sebring which is an Intermediate according to Dollars website but it has a tiny boot and we couldn't fit our luggage in and had to pay to upgrade to a Pacifica.

The year before last we had a compact car and it was a Dodge Neon. It was ok and good on fuel but no room for two cases. One in boot and one on back seat. Had the Sebring last year which still never had much boot space but a much nicer car.

To be precise, the PT cruiser is classed as an "Intermediate Speciality", but that basically means its in the same category as the Intermediate. Dollar actually class this as an upgrade from the standard Intermediate. I know some people don't like them too much, but many people love these cars and we get a lot of emails from customers asking if we can book them a PT cruiser.

The categories are have no relationship to luggage size. It is the seating capacity and legroom that determines a car category, so although the PT has fairly limited luggage space, the interior space makes it an Intermediate.

I would be interested to know if the PT cruisers hired recently, have the luggage cover in place. The last 2 that we have hired were supplied without the luggage cover, which meant that all luggage was on display. This is especially annoying if you wish ( and we normally do) to pop into a supermarket enroute to the villa

we ordered a 2 door compact for our trip and am here at the moment.
It turned out to be a 4 door PT Cruiser which is OK for the 2 of us. None seemed to have the rear shelf as I looked at some in their car park (Dollar) before I went back to report it.

Has all that's really necessary ( and the first car we have hired here with a compass!) no height seat adjustment though.

Re the cases problem, yes they only go on seats for their classification. We have had quite a few Intermediates which could not get 2 cases in the 'boot'. Very big boots, just the aperarture is soooooo small to get the cases in. Not much point ordering a larger car for the case issue if only 2 of you as the other case can go on the back seat.

larger car, less mpg-------- especially as 'gas' is now a whopping $3.50 per gallon! WOnder what the locals would make of £1.09 per litre! $9.57

Does the PT Cruiser have a similar boot size to the dodge caliber?

probably deeper than a PT but the access via the trunk apperature is quite small. The PT having no parcel shelf and the ability to fold down the back seats probaably has the betters space for cases, depends how many in your party

Ian, i know its a light hearted comment, but there is a couple of things you should realise.

The American pay structure is nothing like the UK, people get much less per hour.
The US gallon is smaller than the UK gallon, so the cost would be more per gallon to directly compare.
US cars do less per gallon, my PT Cruiser does approx 22MPG.

So in answer to your question, it sucks that it costs $3.50 and in comparison its just as hard on us "locals" as what you pay in the UK.

Remember a year ago the cost was $2.50 so the increase is % wise much more over the year.

The PT Cruiser is an odd car in so much as people either love them or hate them. We have more requests from people specifically wanting this car, as compared to those who say they prefer not to have this car.
