Hi Roger,

I've just read that there is now the option of asking to take the car back with a full tank of fuel when you have the Silver package, thereby avoiding paying over the odds for the fuel.
Are you able to 100% confirm this and are you able to re-issue the voucher to avoid any complications at the time of pickup.

Thank you.

I did post that this morning on another thread, but the thread seems to have vanished.

This is with Dollar (not Alamo). You can now opt to take the car back with a full tank on the Silver option rather than empty to avoid Dollar's extortionate re-fuelling fee. The voucher will still say to returm empty, and pay for a tank of fuel, so you need to tell the rep on the desk that you prefer the option of returning full.

thanks again.

I very much doubt Alamo will do the same(although I'd have said the same if you asked me about Dollar doing it until recently).

Extortionate was a bit 'tongue in cheek' as it's still less than UK fuel prices, but around $6.50 per gallon. It's current around $3.50 per gallan at the pump so not far off double.

Alamo are around the same price to refuel at around double the pump price.

Just as an update to this, we arrived on Saturday and picked up a car from Dollar on the silver option, and asked if we could return the car with a full tank. Not a problem, they hand write a note on the printed agreement "return full".

Roger, when we picked the car up from Dollar on Monday and asked about this option the rep refused to let us do this saying quite categorically that this was not possible with Dollar. We have now paid for the full tank of fuel, is there anything you can do please?

That's great Roger, that's long been one of my Micks biggest beefs that you either end up giving them a gallon (at least) of gas and then they resell (which if you take the number of cars returned each day is a nice bonus for them) or end up keep topping up at the last minute. I'm sure there must be more than one occasion that we've got to the airport on fumes:)

You're the second person I've heard that has been told this. You wont actually have paid the tank of fuel yet (they charge it at the end), so just return full and point out to the check-in clerk the tank is full (that's the important part). They should then not charge you, but if they do, drop me an email on your return along with your order number and rental agreement number and we can have them refund.

Do you know how much the fuel charge is for a people Carrier or 4X4 ? Normally we go for the gold option but have been advised this time to go for the silver and I just wanted to see what the difference in price would be our rental will be for 4 weeks.

Thank you

7 seater is around $120, and probably the same for a 4x4. Thats around double the pump price.

I have been looking at returning a car full with alamo rather than pay the fuel price that they charge, and looking on the Alamo website the fuel policy says

quote:
"Option 2: Return Full or Pay Alamo for Gas
This option allows a renter to return the vehicle with a full tank of gas or pay Alamo at the end of the rental for gas used but not replaced. Price per gallon/litre will be higher than local fuel prices.

Important Note: For Europeans booking in the US and Canada, unless included in the rate package, payment for this tank will be required at time of rental. No refund will be given for fuel purchased but not used.

is this fair as they are saying that if you are traveling from the UK you cant use the return Full option

The conditions on the Alamo site relate to bookings made directly with Alamo, so I can't really comment. Most times Europeans book through agent such as ourselves and get the fuel included. If they go for the Silver option then they do have to pay a tank of fuel, but then they are saving a fortune compared to booking direct with Alamo even with the higher fuel charge.

The Alamo fuel charge tends to be quite a lot less than Dollars.
