Last summer we travelled to Miami Airport. We went along the Osceola Parkway to the Junction with the Florida Turnpike and then down the Turnpike, past Yeehaw Junction and joined the I95 at Fort Pierce which would have taken us right down to Miami although we took a detour at West Palm beach and followed the Highway 1 along the coast.

Have to agree with Judy.

Osceola Parkway to the Junction with the Florida Turnpike then just head on down to Miami. Follow signs around Miami to US1 which takes you onto the Keys.

For more 'confidence' hire a sat nav -it makes such a difference. Takes the panic out of it all when you take a wrong turn or can't find your accommodation :)

Sat nav in Miami is a good idea. It can be quite confusing to drive round and at the moment there are a few roadworks that have large diversions in place and it is sooooo easy to take a wrong turn. (I know that bit cos we did it and we know Miami fairly well)

Miami to Key West doesn't have many options!!!

Turnpike & I95 is obviously most direct 3-4 hours, but it is an ugly route.

If you have the time(all day), going down the 'other side' and looking in at some of the Gulf resorts is a much nicer tourist route - but of course much longer.

US 27 is pretty fast if you don't like driving on the interstate, and not too busy once you get out of Polk County. It's dual carriageway all the way to the edge of Miami, where you pick up the interstate.

Watch out for the bears in Highlands County. Well that's what the signs say!

We prefer to use US 27 as you drive through place such as Sebring and Lake Placid rather than just pass places when on the turnpike or I95.
Not the most scenic of routes but towns like Frostproof break up the journey.
Must be my favourite name for a town, who would'nt like to live in a town called Frostproof

hello everybody, we also quite like the idea of driving down to Miami from Orlando and were wondering if anybody knows of somewhere to stay overnight and whether you would have to book in advance. We are going to be there in August. How long would a scenic route take?

America invented the Motel and there are thousands to choose from along any route; without the need to book.

Taking the West(Gulf coast) route would take about 5 hours of actual driving. The additional time would be how long you detour to go to visit places like Marco Island etc.

IMO none of the Freeway routes are scenic as such, but they bypass some very attractive places that are worth making a short detour to visit.

I have to agree with FJ.

We used to have Family in Fort Lauderdale and would visit them for a long weekend everytime we went to Florida. The trip down 27 is easy. The speed limits lower as you approach towns but are 65 to 70 most of the time. I usually make it in 4 hrs from Indians Ridge.

Sat nav would always take us North East to the Turnpike then down and this didn't seem any quicker.

One day, I checked on the map and decided to try 27. Never looked back. Incidentally, I mentioned this to one of my cousins neighbours who was a Project Manager working at MCO and he had to visit Orlando once a week, he started using this route too.

From Champions Gate, go west on I4 for one Junction then South on 27. (on the way to my cousins, the sat nav would then say turn left in 194 miles! And that was actually the road leading to his estate. Couldn't have been easier.)
