| Miami to Key West doesn't have many options!!!
Turnpike & I95 is obviously most direct 3-4 hours, but it is an ugly route.
If you have the time(all day), going down the 'other side' and looking in at some of the Gulf resorts is a much nicer tourist route - but of course much longer.

| | hello everybody, we also quite like the idea of driving down to Miami from Orlando and were wondering if anybody knows of somewhere to stay overnight and whether you would have to book in advance. We are going to be there in August. How long would a scenic route take? | | Report this post to a moderator | goto top of page |

America invented the Motel and there are thousands to choose from along any route; without the need to book.
Taking the West(Gulf coast) route would take about 5 hours of actual driving. The additional time would be how long you detour to go to visit places like Marco Island etc.
IMO none of the Freeway routes are scenic as such, but they bypass some very attractive places that are worth making a short detour to visit.

I have to agree with FJ.
We used to have Family in Fort Lauderdale and would visit them for a long weekend everytime we went to Florida. The trip down 27 is easy. The speed limits lower as you approach towns but are 65 to 70 most of the time. I usually make it in 4 hrs from Indians Ridge.
Sat nav would always take us North East to the Turnpike then down and this didn't seem any quicker.
One day, I checked on the map and decided to try 27. Never looked back. Incidentally, I mentioned this to one of my cousins neighbours who was a Project Manager working at MCO and he had to visit Orlando once a week, he started using this route too.
From Champions Gate, go west on I4 for one Junction then South on 27. (on the way to my cousins, the sat nav would then say turn left in 194 miles! And that was actually the road leading to his estate. Couldn't have been easier.) | | Report this post to a moderator | goto top of page |
