We are planning on (hopefully) seeing the night launch tomorrow night. Where would be the best place to see it from at 2.30am?

We usually just park up on the Causeway looking over to the launch pads but wondered if there is somewhere better to view if from, preferably with some facilities as we may be there for a while.

You may welll find Jetty Park is open for the launch. They are for daytime ones, we went for the launch of Cassini some years ago at 4am and they were open.

Neil the launch pads are almost on the coastline. If you have a look on Google Earth you should be able to see them

Shame it was not for a week later. I would have loved for my Dad to have seen a launch. Rosie, do you know when it is due back please?

Lucky you. Every time we have hoped to see one it has ended being postponed days ahead of schedule. We've never even got to the day before! Hope you find a good spot.

We went to see the Shuttle launch on Tuesday morning (2.30am)

We only managed to get 1 photo as we were too busy watching it ourselves.

It was spectacular to say the least and I'm so glad we went. It was sooo busy there and very strange to see traffic jams extending for miles at that time of the morning. It reminded me of the scene from Close Encounters where the locals all got out picnic chairs and set up for the evening.

We arrived a good 8 hours before launch time and I'm so glad we did. The best spots were already taken

We found a restaurant called Dogs R Us so parked up and had a meal, which was ok. We then stayed put in the car park for the rest of the night as the view across the road was perfect for viewing the launch.

We had a nap in the car, wandered up to the local McDonalds for coffee, as they had stayed open throughout the night, chatted to people, to wile away the hours. It was all really friendly and fun.

As the launch drew nearer the crowds were increasing at an alarming rate so we made our way across the road to stake out a spot to stand.

Lots of people had radios and TV's and everyone was counting down to the launch together.

As it launched there were roars and gasps from everyone, the whole sky lit up. It was magnificent.

Unfortunately there was a lot of cloud and the shuttle disappeared within seconds. We all stood and waited for the sonic boom, which followed.

It took us over 3 hours to get home, but it was worth it just to see a rare night launch. If you get a chance to see a night launch then take it, it was brilliant

Wow. That looks terrific. Wish we could have been there with you. It was good enough when I saw it from your villa last year, the atmosphere must have been amazing. I guess it's an early night for you tonight

I got up to watch it from our house. It was too cloudy to see the shuttle itself, but could see all the clouds lit up orange. It was like a mini sunset for a couple of minutes.

Fantastic photo Rosie - is the blob to the right the moon?

We have never seen a launch but would love to - they are always on days when we are here in the UK

We were lucky enough to be here for this night launch too. What a fantastic experience - well worth the drive and the long wait. We watched from Titusville and found the following website a usefulsource of information - http://spacelaunchinfo.com/faq.html#park . If you get a chance to see a night launch I thoroughly recommend it - it is spectacular.

Rose,

Glad it turned ok for you.

I got up at 2.20am to watch it and it was a waste of time, didn't see anything due to the clouds.

The picture looks cool.

Will have to catch one, one of these days.

Is it that busy for a day launch? A launch is scheduled for 8.30am when we are there. Do we need to be there 8 hours before? Knew it would be busy but didn't realise that busy!

Samantha, no it isn't as busy for the day launches, we usually aim to get there maybe a couple of hours before for those. If you have the chance then make a day of it, and take a look round the area. Cocoa beach and the surrounding area's are beautiful, and the nature preserve on Merritt Island is worth a drive too.
