Restored from backup 1/5/08 - John

Back in January 2005 Sally D started a thread which later became known as the OV Slimming Club. The first thread went on to 280 pages before we eventually had to start Part 2, then Part 3, Part 4 and finally Part 5

Fast forward almost 3 years and many of us are still long term posters - myself, Mizzy, Fiona, Julieanne, Sally D, Thorton (Jill), Janny, plus in 2007 some newer comers canarypam (Pam), another (Frances), SDJ (Sandra), Stabard (Jan), Albear (Ali), plus of course Caitlin (Paula), Nikki D, Sharon G have all popped in for a while

Of course it goes without saying that we welcome newcomers with open arms, so feel free to pop in for a chat anytime

The thread started out very much as a Slimming Club but it has developed into so much more of a healthy living thread with a huge amount of support, care and understanding of what we all go through as we strive towards a much healthier way of life for ourselves and our families

I would just like to say at this point a huge big THANK YOU to all the girls on the Slimming Club threads for all your love and support over the last 3 years

So it just remains for me to say that the old Slimming Club Part 5 will now be locked and we can look forward to a fabulous 2008 on our renamed thread BE GOOD TO YOURSELF - PART 1

Can't believe its been nearly 3 years

Still not ready to come back just yet, too much christmas food still about

Was hopeing once I get flights booked for August it will get me going again. Have been looking like mad but a couple of days before christmas DH was told that 7 of the 11 managers at his work are being made redundant in April, great just what we need after the awful start to the year we had last year. So all on hold AGAIN. Never had this worry before and it's not nice.

Just glas we had not already booked.

Wishing everyone a great 2008

Hope your new is not as bad as you are expecting Sally, but still not a nice way to start a new year off.

Happy New Year to everyone and Healthy eating plans!!!!

Well, it's weigh in day today! As our usual day is Tuesday our consultant has deceided to do a quick weigh in session today to cover xmas day and new years day! I have had no mince pies, xmas pud, custard, cream , ice cream etc but .... I have too much wine and we went to my sisters for xmas day - she cooked roast potatoes with olive oil and leeks in cheese sauce which I cannot resist - oh dear! We have entertained every night since xmas day, I have avoided pudding but have had cheese and biscuits (cheese healthy A choice) so I am hoping for just a couple of pounds on which I am sure I can get rid of before the next weigh in!!

Wish me luck!! Will check in later and own up to damage!!!

Hi everyone

Hope you all had a great Christmas and I wish you all a happy and healthy 2008!

Sally I hope your next news is good news. It is not a nice feeling and must be a tremendous worry. My husband has twice been made redundant during our marriage but sometimes the cloud has a silver lining. Fingers crossed for you.

Well done Frances on doing so well. You have always sounded so motivated when I have popped on for an update.

There is still too much Christmas food in our house also to resist temptation. But I am starting to get the itch to do something about it again, I feel fat and sluggish, so roll on 2008! Countdown to Florida shows 7 months and 7 days so I need to get into action!

I was lucky enough to get a new laptop for Christmas (still can't get used to the 'mouse'!)so no excuses for not keeping in touch now!

Well, I have decided to join this thread not only to make myself feel fitter but to ensure hubby does as instructed by his GP - he has just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes so must improve his diet, exercise more and give up smoking. The latter I think will be a non-starter but we have started on the other two. He has started walking to the paper shop to pick up his morning paper, when it is not raining, and our plates at mealtimes are full of vegetables with less meats, dairy products and the dreaded fried foods.

welcome aboard Brenda

there's a little booklet that you can pick up for free in boots you may be interested in, it's being advertised on tv at the minute and talks about changing one thing at a time, you've made a great decision to start making small changes and not trying to tackle too much at once, i hope you will get lots of support from all of us on here to help you every step of the way

food wise, i'm holding it together at the minute taking things nice and steady and i'm pleased with myself, we have company tomorrow coming for that turkey leftovers curry and i've got my meals already planned which is half the battle

there's a lot of chocolate in the house which i haven't banned completely, i'm just sticking to a very small amount and counting it in, because you know me ladies i just love my chocolate

Thanks for the tip about the booklet Mizzy, I will pick one up next time I am near a Boots.

Julie, hubby is attending a clinic at our GP surgery for specialist help and has been given a diet booklet on what to eat and what to avoid but he has lapsed over Christmas, as the festive goodies were just too much for his willpower - he has a very sweet tooth and the chocs were too much of a temptation. He has also been told to take more exercise in the form of brisk walking, not strolling. The nurse has accepted that stopping smoking as well as dealing with the other two elements of his programme would be too much so has suggested he master the regular exercise and diet first and leave the smoking cessation until later.

Welcome Brenda. Regarding a sweet tooth - is it any good suggesting some fruit? You can make up a nice fresh fruit salad of berries, applies and oranges which will be lovely and sweet. Our market is a good place to buy from and on a Saturday evening they are selling everything off - I spend about £10 and come away with 3 or 4 bags full to the brim. Mind you if I could just get everyone to stop giving out chocs for christmas I might be a better inspiration.

Also feeling fat and sluggish, hopped on the scales and nearly had heart failure at the 2 - 3 lbs that has gone on - why it should be a surprise to me I do not know! Anyway all the excess food in the fridge has gone and we are back to normal grub! Having said that we are out for a Chinese for NYE, but as I am duty driver I will have to be good on that front at least!

Been down in Bournemouth emptying MIL's flat, which is fun. Have emptied half the kitchen and some of the cupboards so far, but managed enough to keep DH up and down in the lift for the best part of the afternoon with large bin liners packed full! We have decided we need to stay there a night to have enough time to attack it thoroughly, and that 1 pack of black liners at a time is not enough! A moral for us hoarders I think.

it's back to normal grub for us too Fiona, isn't it a relief when most of the goodies have gone? you sound very busy again mrs, i hope the girls are helping and you are not over doing things

Julie, 5lbs off is a great start even though the cause was horrible it must be a motivator to keep it off and lose more, i'm not ready to set any goals yet, waiting til after that first new yrs weigh in on 7th jan when i see the seasonal damage

Brenda, i am a chocoholic and when i'm in control i find that allowing myself a small piece at the end of each day stops me from eating bar after bar, there is a lot of truth in that saying "a little of what you fancy does you good" but the emphasis is on the word "little" here

Julie, that is an excellent achievement of a full stone but sorry to hear you were poorly. Good luck with the goal for the next 16 weeks.

Unfortunately we have quite a lot goodies left as we had expected more family over at Christmas but there were some poorly souls so our numbers dwindled. There appears to be quite a nasty flu bug going around at the moment and now my son has it

Yesterday the healthy exercise included a walk for the newspapers and then we hit the shops to see if there were any sales bargains but I was rather disappointed so bought nothing. The evening was a bit of a disaster as friends came around and drinks flowed and nibbles came out aplenty. Hubby couldn't keep his hands out of the bowls as we had a very light evening meal so he made up with snacks. One good point, he only put his hand in the Quality Street tin once, normally it is non stop.

Your suggestion about a little treat at the end of the day is a good one Mizzy and would be something to look forward to after being good during the day.

Hi brenda - I'm chocoholic too but I find it best not to have any!! if I can resist for a few days then I can be fine and it doesn't bother me to have it in the house but I have to stay very focused!!!

I have woken up in a more motivated mood after yesterdays weigh in! I have had a good breakfast of porridge which will keepme going till lunch time. I will probably have Batchelor's Pasta'n'Sauce as it is free on a green day. Not sure about dinner yet - but I fancy omelet and salad for some strange reason, must be the glimmer of sunshine outside!!

Hope everyone has a good day. This thread is such a great help to me, thank you everyone for the support.

Brenda, welcome to this thread. Good to have a neighbour on here!!!! Sorry to learn about Dave but sounds as though he has made a small start. We shall have to meet up for brisk walks around WWB We also have bikes if you feel the need for a ride in January

Julie, well done on your 5lbs although not an ideal way to go about it to say the least

Not in the mood at all and have managed to gain a couple of pounds. As I am at target, think I had better get into the mood before Thursday as I may have to pay again at SW If I don't go, I won't get another chance as we leave for San Diego on 8th January for 11 nights, then to Florida for 2 weeks, then a cruise for 7 nightsand back to our villa for another week. Think I will look like a house after all that if I don't get myself motivated. Off to have another chocolate

Happy New Year everyone.

Julie, thank you for such detailed advice - it is going to be a great help I have never been involved with slim clubs or undertaken any strict diets so this is going to be a new learning experience. I am a vegetarian so have always eaten fairly healthily but hubby has an aversion to most green vegetables and is a great one for fried foods, red meats and sweets. I now need to change his eating habits

Sandra, unfortunately David has only just been diagnosed so with Christmas upon us, he hasn't really had an opportunity to knuckle down and take the advice seriously. Hopefully it will be part of his New Year's resolution. If he starts slacking on the exercise when we are over in January, I may be around to borrow those bikes

Brenda, I can thoroughly recommend SW. I have tried all the other 'slimming clubs' etc. but do not find I am limited by anything at SW. As a vegetarian it would be great for you as you could just do 'green days'. We have several veggies in my local SW Club who have done extremely well.

Julie, sorry to hear you are not yet feeling 100%. My knee is fine thank you. I am very concerned that you have been continually using your knee since summertime and hope you will not suffer later on in life. At least I was only walking on mine a few days, and then on crutches, before having the surgery. I would definitely gone privately if I already did not belong to BUPA. It would have only been around £1000ish and well worth it. Sometimes in life one cannot afford to wait for our extremely good NHS.

Well done Mizzy on your entertaining.
