We are going out for 3 weeks at christmas and my mum has a list of things that she wants to take with her - I told her not too bother, but she wants to take them anyway.

Question is, will they be allowed?

1. Marmalade?
2. Shredded Wheat (I know - Publix - you can buy them there!!!)

We are taking the usual tea bags, but as you are not allowed fruit - would the marmalade come under this umbrella?

Also, do they have to be put onto the blue customs forms?

thanks

Caz

Caroline

As for as I am aware Marmalade is fine, it is only fresh fruit that it as risk of being fruit bugs etc in on them. But Walmart has a huge amount of british goods in now although a little more expensive, and so do Publix. i am sure I have seen marmalade there.

Shredded Wheat is ok, you will just need to declare it. We have taken in Weetabix and Muesli and have had no problems. We do this less often now as Publix and Walmart stock more British goods (as mentioned above by Ceri). I hope that helps.

I fully understand your mum's concern; my husband can't be without marmalade for his toast when we are in Florida( how sad is he?). I know for definite that Publix sell it in their "Ethnic aisle". They even stock his favourite - Duerrs traditional Scottish marmalade, although it is about $4 a jar!

I think you are suppossed to put everything that you are bringing in (tea bags etc) but not sure.

I have never bothered before, but it crossed my mind today!

Publix sells its own brand of marmalade. It tastes just as good as any marmalade back in the UK.

When we came in ORLANDO and had cleared immaggrations and pick our cases up we were leaving the airport and giveing in our white card we had filled in, The cutoms officer taking them from us shouted to us all have you any food in your bags ,We had none so we went straight through some had and stayed behind so they were enforcing the law ,So as said before you can buy the things you want in PUBLICS or GOODINGS SUPER MARKET has them .

I think you only put on the customs form things that you are leaving

The Customs form asks you if you're bringing in any food, meat, etc and you need to put down on the form if you are before those cute sniffer dogs pounce! There are signs all over MCO Customs to declare things rather than face a hefty fine if they pick you for an inspection and find you out.

So, I should write down marmalade, tea bags, cereal and celebrations - better safe then sorry?

Caz

I think you will find it is more 'fresh foodstuffs' that Customs are interested in. We have taken all sorts of canned, jars, packet food for the last 15 years, had sniffer dogs around, had cases looked at, and never had a problem. We have not put that sort of food on the form either.

I would not personally worry about it.

I'm of the opinion that it's best to confess to something straight up rather than hope you don't get found out - if you declare anything that's allowed anyway, they can't say you've been dishonest can they?

On Wednesday we brought in Heinz beans, tea bags, coffee pods, salad cream, Christmas puddings, mince pies and a tub of Celebrations, with no trouble. We had to go through the 2nd scanner at Customs where he asked what food we had and he wanted to know what the round things scanning were (Christmas pud), that and the mince my MC had asked me to bring over for her.

My hubby likes the beans with reduced sugar and salt and no srftificial sweeteners which we havent found here yet.

I took 2 large jars of celebrations sweets last time I travelled.

I underlined food on my customs sheet and carried them through in a plastic carrier ( bought them at duty free)

The customs officer asked me what I was carrying, I told him it was candy for a friend who lived in Florida and held up the carrier bag. His reply?

"I sure wish you were my friend"

We had about a dozen jars of baby food which we told the immigration officer about.

The immigration officer put a mark on our white cards and the customs bloke got a foodstuff agency bloke to have a look at what we had just to be on the safe side.

He checked them over, said thats fine and let us go.

This was at Sanford though, not MCO.
I always find the staff a lot more relaxed and user friendly at Sanford with it specifically being a "holiday" airport.

I remember our first trip to Florida in 1995 then I brought rashers ,sausages ,brown bread ,butter and a carton of frozen milk which would be defrosted by the time we got to our destination , now we shop in Public on the way to the villa. Looking back did we think we were going to an unexplored part of the world , I have no idea why I put such hard work on myself ,but I know I still dont like their sausages .

I always take gluten free food in with me and declare it. If you make it clear to the customs guy you don't have meat or fresh stuff they usually wave you striaght through.

Occasionally they will scan the bags, but I've never been asked to get it all out and show them - which is just as well as we spread it through all our cases incase one gets lost.
