Illuminations - Part 1 - The Foretelling

I thought I might try something a smidge different with these Illuminations photos. Rather than just post the best half dozen from the night I thought I would take you through the whole experience with a 4 part mini-series. I doubt it will rival Lost for compulsive viewing but I hope you like it.

There are no surprises to the first step; getting to Epcot and finding a good spot to photograph the photos. One of the things I really enjoy when trying to photograph Illuminations is that each show is different (different weather, different wind) and there's an option of a different point of view. Every spot around the lagoon is a good spot for watching the fireworks but I think some are better than others when trying to photograph them.

Setting up the kit involves (usually) getting the tripod set, getting everything framed up (depends a bit on which way the wind is blowing), checking the horizon is level and then taking a couple of test shots to check everything.

Every so often you hit on a good photo more by luck than by good judgement. This was one of those nights and a couple of the framing shots came up with the most amazing sky. If only it had lasted until the show it would have made the most amazing backdrop.

Once everything is set is just a case of waiting and watching. The imagineers zip around the lagoon making their final checks. Crowds start to gather. A little while before the show the torches are lit and the music changes in harmony with the lighting. The countdown is on. Waiting ... waiting ... waiting.
