| The main issue is whether they will fit in the 1 small bag you are allowed to carry-on. (If you aren't flying in the next day or so the bag size limits are likely to be increased very soon.)
The items themselves are OK as carry-on and you shouldn't be asked to turn them on and off but you might have to remove them from your bag at the X-ray. | Edited by - Katys Grandad on 20 Sep 2006 13:35:45 | | Report this post to a moderator | goto top of page |

| I just got back from Vegas, We flew from Edinburgh, I had my digital camera in my carry on, which was a rucksack. I just had to have the rucksack xrayed, all was fine.
Although,
A friend flew from Heathrow, she had to turn on her camera, Ipod and PSP at the screening process, other than that everything went smooth. I know these are vegas related instances but its just what I experienced going to the states.
P.S. Absolutely no delays leaving the UK, only 30 min delay getting back.

| The baggage rules at the moment are pointless. You can board a flight anywhere in the world except the u.s. on an inbound flight to the UK without any new restriction on hand baggage size. On the way out of the uk, it has to be a laptop bag size. So one can assume they don't want outbound flights blown up but it's fine with inbound ones. We flew back from Vienna last weekend and It made me quite mad seeing what everyone else was taking on board.
They were also taking cigarette lighters from people, who then went through to the departure lounge where they bought another one. A great help for the budding shoe bomber eh?
I don't have any problem with heavier security but if it's needed, make it work, don't do it purely to be seen to be doing it. | Edited by - Macka on 20 Sep 2006 14:30:52 | | Report this post to a moderator | goto top of page |

My experience is that there isn't any new hand baggage size restriction on US-UK flights. | | Report this post to a moderator | goto top of page |

| It doesn't make much sense but my take on it is that the UK government realised very quickly that the rest of the world wasn't going to follow it's knee-jerk reaction to what happened. Not by nature being too keen on admitting they overreacted, they have been making gradual easings of their rule and we will see another in a few days.

I think the preferred term will be:
"Subsequent to a painstaking re- appraisal of the security situation and after due consideration of advice from Government sources it has been decided to recommend that airlines operating from United Kingdom airports under the jurisdiction of the British Airports Authority, be allowed to consider a relaxation of the current restrictions on the dimensions of cabin luggage."

| Close-but no coconut!
The exact quote is, from the beeb;
"I think probably what you will see is a limited relaxation in terms of what people take on board aircraft but what people shouldn't expect is a complete lifting of restrictions," a Downing Street spokesman said.

| BAA Gatwick site still states hand luggage size as 16cm/35cm/45cm. which is about the size of a laptop bag. I had aldeady purchased a new bag for my trip and found that the pocket on the front exeeds the size required. So had to but another one the only thing I could find was a messenger bag. | | Report this post to a moderator | goto top of page |

| Hand luggage rules to be relaxed
Hand baggage restrictions imposed in the UK after an alleged terrorist plot to attack airliners are to be eased from Friday, the government has said. Passengers will still only be allowed one piece of luggage but the maximum size permitted will increase to that of a small roller-suitcase.
The limits have been blamed for causing delays and for costing airlines.
Most liquids will still not be allowed through security but instruments can be brought on board in a separate case.
Professional musicians have criticised the ban, some of whom cancelled tours rather than risk valuable instruments in aircraft holds.
The changes come after the government's transport security division held talks with the aviation industry on Monday.
British Airways, which has said cancelling more than 1,000 flights because of the alert cost it £40m, welcomed the announcement.
"This is a sensible step forward that takes full account of the security threat level while making life easier for our customers," it said.
A Virgin Atlantic Airways spokeswoman said: "We are pleased that the restrictions have been relaxed and we believe this is a step in the right direction."
Ryanair had earlier announced it was seeking compensation of about £3m from the government over airport delays resulting from the increased anti-terror measures.
Compensation claim
Thousands of flights were cancelled at Heathrow and BAA's other UK airports after the alleged plot was foiled on 10 August.
A total ban on hand luggage was initially brought in but after a few days passengers were allowed to carry on a laptop computer-sized bag
The new size limit for carry-on luggage will increase to 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 17.75in x 9.85in approx).
The aim of the measures announced today is to maintain that security while lessening the inconvenience to passengers Douglas Alexander, Transport Secretary
Electrical equipment continues to be allowed on board, but must be removed for screening.
The current security measures ban all liquids except medication essential for the flight and baby milk and liquid baby food, which must be tasted by the passenger.
The ban means only baby-milk and essential medicines are allowed through security - after they have been tasted by the passenger.
The Department for Transport said it is working on ways to ease this restriction in future.
However, solid cosmetics will now be allowed in hand luggage.
"The measures we introduced in August were in response to a very real and serious threat which continues," the Department for Transport said.
Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander said: "We will never compromise the security of the travelling public.
"The aim of the measures announced today is to maintain that security while lessening the inconvenience to passengers.
"I am grateful for the forbearance passengers have shown and assure them that we will keep these regulations under review."
