| A thread prompted by Julie's(Mach 2) contribution in the 'Free upgrades' thread.
I had also been reading some information about this subject.
In 2002 there were:
Total number of U.S. airline pilots – More than 30,000
Total number of female U.S. airline pilots – Approximately 3,345
Total number of female U.S. airline captains – Approximately 740
So roughly 10% then and probably the ratio has not decreased since 2002.
As far as I can recall, in the hundreds of flights I have made, I have never had a female as the Captain and only twice a female first officer - once on a AA internal flight and the other on a RAF flight.

| No reason why there shouldn't be a lot more female pilots - you don't have to parallel park a jumbo.
(Please be gentle - somebody had to be the first to say it!!) | | Report this post to a moderator | goto top of page |

One sits next to me on most car journeys I make Andrew. She's self-appointed though. | Edited by - Katys Grandad on 24 Jul 2006 19:52:52 | | Report this post to a moderator | goto top of page |

| We had a lady captain on a flight we were on... it was annoying to hear all the male passenger comments such as ''hope she's not suffering with PMT today!' Give us a break lads.... | Les | | Report this post to a moderator | goto top of page |

I agree - these sort of comments make me mad!
I have worked as a 'woman in a man's world' for years. Luckily these days these sorts of remarks are few and far between.

Flew domestic on American earlier this week. For the first time I can recall all the crew (Captain, First Offcier, Cabin Crew) were female.
It's still pretty unsual but I do see more female pilots in US terminals these days. | | Report this post to a moderator | goto top of page |

| Came back on VA Tuesday and both Camtain and First Officer were women, Captain said " we should be 8hrs or so to get back to Gatwick so it should give us both time to learn how to park this thing...." | | Report this post to a moderator | goto top of page |

| There seems to be more females on USA airlines,As we wait at Atlanta they go passed us while we are waiting to board our plane . There seem a better way of entering all fields in the USA for both men and woman in the USA , As they can get a pension for after they retire and for paying for heath in later life as we all know the heath system is expensive there .
