Sea fishing on either coast is good.

Probably the nearest place to go on an organised fishing trip is Port Canaveral about 45 miles west of Orlando on the SR528. Can be expensive for 4 people.

You can pick up cheap(collapsible) rods, tackle and bait from Wal-Mart(near the beaches) and there are plenty of places to park and surf fish anywhere on the Atlantic coast east of Orlando. Melbourne Beach at the western end of the SR192 is a good place to spend a day.

If you want more info send me a PM.

Sharon,

may be a bit to far to travel( 2 and 1/2 hour drive) but the Boca Grand area is known as the Tarpon capital of the world. Some fantastic beaches around there aswell.
This is a bit long but may be useful:
"
Fishing
Tarpon reigns as the king of southwest Florida fish — the Silver King, to be exact, named for its silver-dollarlike scales. Boca Grande Pass is one of the most celebrated spots in the world for catching the feisty fighter. Nonresidents age 16 and over who wish to fish must obtain a license unless fishing from a vessel or pier covered by its own license. You can buy inexpensive, temporary nonresident licenses at county tax collectors' offices and most Kmarts and bait shops. Check local regulations for season, size, and catch restrictions.

I am going fishing in August from Clearwater but as said it is not that cheap ($400) to hire the boat for the day but everything apart from food and drink is included.

As Andrew states the Tarpon fishing in Boca Grande is the best sports fishing in Florida. Tarpon of 100lbs are often landed(and released as they are un-eatable). However it is for serious fishermen and specialist tackle is used and it is very expensive. I have sometimes hooked a Tarpon from the shore but unfortunately never got close to landing one as they leap in the air and simply break your line; even though that line is strong enough to land 50lb sharks.

It depends how serious you are about fishing and how much you wish to spend. Hiring a boat with a skipper(as Paul suggests) is a good way to be pretty certain of landing some decent fish. If you do go out on a boat make sure that you are well protected against the sun - it is very easy to get badly sunburned.

Robert,

a very good friend of ours is a keen fisherman (especially Carp) and has rented our villa for the last 3 years in May to go Tarpon fishing. There is a charter on Boca Grande he swears by; last year in one evening he and his son caught 5 tarpon all over 100lb and one was of 135lb I believe. If you are planning on visiting that part of Florida let me know and I will get the Charters name. Very decent chap aswell; he refused to take them out on 3 occassions as the weather off shore was not good for fishing and he suspected they wouldn't catch anything.

Hi Sharon

On US27 near the junction with US50 (Colonial drive) there is a tackle shop on the left hand side. If you go in there the guy will give you lots of tips on lake fishing near by. I have been many times on Lake Minneola not far from the tackle shop and its a fish a cast on light tackle. The kids would have a great time!! Note - you do need a florida licience though.

Lake Toho or East Lake Toho are famous for big mouth bass.

Lake Toho is at the end of Poinciana Boulevard at Southport off the 192 or the Kissimmee Lakefront park (turn under the historic archway off the 192 and turn left in the town).

East Lake Toho is off the 192 near St Cloud.

If you're over 16 you need a fishing licence in Florida which you can get at Wal-Mart, bait & tackle shops, etc.

Went fishing on Tuesday with my son (24) with the guy I went with last year at Clearwatwer. Cost was $350 for 6 hours, we had 96 live shrimp as bait and caught 36 fish (8 different species) between us. A great day out, will be doing it again.
