| Well here goes with the latest trip over to Florida, only 6 weeks till we get to do it all again
To explain this unexpected jaunt, we were lucky enough to win the flights in a draw, so only had to pay for the car hire and the first weeks accommodation (our house had guests in). Winning the tickets was the first bit of good luck, the second bit was that Mr & Mrs CDV also won flights, so very kindly offered to let us stay with them till we could get into our house.
OK now that the explanations are over, if you are sitting comfortably then I’ll begin…..
We had planned for Mr & Mrs CDV to stay here on the Sat night and all travel to the airport on the Sunday morning, ready for the flight. We booked the taxi to take us to the airport, but Mr & Mrs CDV decided to travel straight to the airport and book a hotel with parking included for the 2 weeks away….. No problem, we would meet at the airport…..
CDV forgot my phone number to arrange a time to meet up, and called directory enquiries to get the number, not knowing we are ex-directory. What she got was our son’s phone line in his bedroom (anyone with teenager girls will understand why we had the second line put in when our daughters lived at home), so spent the evening ringing his line instead. Being a typical 18 year old he was out on a Saturday evening. We heard his phone ringing off the hook but never bothered answering it, thinking it was just his friends trying to find out which public house or club he would frequenting that evening !!!
All packed and ready for the morning, we headed off to bed, thinking “Oh well, we’ll catch up at the airport”
DAY 1
We arrived at the airport at 8am, I do like to arrive early if you remember from an earlier trip report . The queue was huge so we were grateful for Al’s silver Flying Club membership which meant we could check in at Premium Economy even though we were flying economy. Still no sign of Mr & Mrs CDV so once booked in we decided to go and have some breakfast.
For me the holiday starts as soon as I get to the airport, so I do like to have a good breakfast at Frankie & Benny’s, then a wander round the shops and a decent coffee before proceeding to the departures lounge. Suitably fed and watered and with a couple of small purchases we wandered back down to check in to see if we could find Mr & Mrs CDV…. Still no sign…..
Time was ticking on so we went through to the departure lounge. A quick check of email, and into the Duty Free shop to stock up and we were ready to go. We hung around as long as possible then made our way down to the gate, again assuming we would meet them there….. Still no sign of them, but as we had waited so long in the lounge the chances were they were already on the plane…..
Once onboard we looked around as much as we could from our seats and couldn’t see them but would have to wait till we were airborne to get up and walk around in search of the elusive couple. The plane was half empty and from our exit row seats we spoke to a lovely steward during take off who saved me a row of 3 seats to stretch out on once we could get up. When the seatbelt sign was turned off, we took it in turns to walk up and down the plane looking for our hosts…… Still no sign……
Oh no, what if something dreadful had happened on the way to the airport, or before they had even left for the airport
With nothing else to do whilst aboard the plane we settled down for the journey. I got comfy on my 3 seats, lay down and promptly fell asleep. I remember dreaming that I could hear Mr CDV talking…. Was I dreaming? I opened my eyes and peered over the back of the seat….. there was Mr CDV talking away to Al. What a relief, it turns out that they had upgraded to Premium Economy and we had been missing each other by a matter of minutes at each place.
After CDV came downstairs too and we had a long chat, I went back to sleep and don’t remember anything else till I was asked to sit up and put my seat belt on for landing.
Once through the airport, which was fairly painless and quick, we picked up the car and were on our way to Chez CDV. Vowing to pick up supplies later we went straight to the house.
By now we were all getting hungry so we opted for Cracker Barrel on the 27 tonight, good food and nearby. After a good meal and lots of chat we were ready for bed, back to the house, the supplies could wait till the morning. We all fell into bed exhausted (yes even me )
More to come……
