| Today started off quite overcast and grey down at Cape Haze and Boca Grande but it started to brighten up a little just after I had my first ever grouper rueben sandwich for lunch (thanks for the tips Ruth). A couple of hours later, after an absolutely gorgeous drive up Manasota Key, the sun was shining on Manasota Beach. It isn't half easier to take a good photograph when you have good light to play with.
I think my favourite of these is the one with the young lad chasing the seagulls.
Manasota Beach to Sarasota was another lovely drive with the reward of a triple venti latte at a smashing little Starbucks on Longboat Key just before watching the sunset. That extra shot of espresso really hit the spot and I'm sure that was the reason I ended up buying a new shirt that's almost as loud as Nostromo's. | Steve.

| I love the one with the silvery sheen on the sea. Was that taken with the sun behind you, reflecting off the water?
The picture of the scattering gulls is also very imaginative. Well done again. | Nostromo | | Report this post to a moderator | goto top of page |

Aren't you missing a zero somewhere Andrew?
Longboat Key is gorgeous too. I had a quick look in the windows of a couple of realtors but couldn't decide if the numbers on the ads were the house prices or the contact telephone numbers.
I'll be doing an extra line on the lottery next weekend I think. | Steve.

| Hi Nostromo. The silver sea shot was taken straight into the sunshine. You get heaps more reflections and twinkles if you look straight into the sun. The technique (called 'contra-jour' by the way, literally 'against the day') works well on anything reflective with texture (snow, block-paving) and it also works well in forests. If you put the sun behind a tree you get all the shadows kind of reaching forwards towards you and it draws you into the photo. The flip side is that it's really easy for the camera's metering system to be fooled and miss the correct exposure by miles. Digital makes this somewhat easier due to the instant feedback you get. That said, the Nikon got it absolutely spot-on with the first shot, so full marks to Nikon for this I think. I did a couple of others trying to silhouette something against the sea but I don't think they work quite as well. I'll add a couple to the thread to see what you think.
Jan, for the boy chasing the seagulls you have to rely on the camera somewhat to get everything in focus really quickly and get the exposure right first time. For any kind of action shot like this one don't be afraid to snap away and take heaps of photos, then sort them all out on the computer back home. I got a total of 5 shots of the birds, but that's only because I'm still getting used to the camera and I didn't know where the switch was to flip it into autodrive, and then I could have rattled along at about 4 frames a second and taken 20 instead of the 5 and probably got a better one. Maybe.
Lucy, I snapped the Starbucks especially for you. I'll add that to the thread too. | Steve.

I think if the seagull's wing had been up instead of down and it had been a little to the left and I'd got the horizon level the first shot would have been a competition winner. If, if, if ... I don't think the second works quite as well, but I'm not quite sure why. I think it might be the seagull's head just poking above the beach/see line that kills it a little. The third shot with the wave I do quite like. I very nearly posted this one instead of the one I originally chose. It was a close call. Strangly enough I think the seagull's head sticking up works well on this one as it lines up with where the wave is breaking (by accident, not by design). Having the kids in the last 2 shots, despite putting them right on the thirds, seems to detract from the simplicity of the image somehow.
These are just my thoughts though and I do welcome any and all other thoughts and opinions. A great way to improve one's photography is to look at it and talk about it. There are no right or wrongs as everyone sees something different. | Steve.
