I had an email from an American family enquiring about rates for our guest house. They said they had "sticker shock" at the prices they had been quoted by other places in the UK.

just a colloquial term for thats bl$$ dy expensive, as in the price on the ticket or sticker?

It actually comes from Car shopping where the sticker is ON the window- so you can see the price on the sticker. Hence- having sticker shock is that price on the sticker is very high or higher then you wanted to spend.
