The first two were taken at night; you can just catch a couple of stars in the second one. There was a long wait expected while a big vehicle was escorted through the Zion tunnel so I asked the ranger if it would be OK to do a bit of photography as the park looked so lovely in the moonlight. It's the first time I've ever attempted to do any nightime photography. Must do more of it sometime, but must also remember that jumping out of a car with a heater into a climate where the temperature is well below freezing is not a good idea.

The deer were justlucky. I came a different way on one of the trails and ended up with a mile walk back along the road to where the car was parked. I had almsot walked passed the deer before I saw them. There was a whole family of them. Baby deer is looking at you. Mummy deer is eating some grass, and if you look closely you can just see daddy deer (with antlers) in the background.

Thanks Steve. great pics! Zion looks so different to the time we saw it with snow! That tunnel was a nightmare as we were in a large coach and it almost touched the sides - but it was worth it!

The bookshop is also mega interesting with all sorts of useful info.

Wow, great shots.
They make me doubly want to head across country when the children are older to experience a bit more of what the rest of the US has to offer.

The sheer scale of things is awesome.

Have you hit Vegas yet or are you en route there?

Great to see Zion in your photo's, we passed through in the dark 3 years ago, on the way up to Bryce, just as dramatic and amazing. Would love to go back and spend a week or two exploring.

Great shots Steve, Zion is an amazing place, it seems funny to here you talk about it being cold as it was 100 + degrees when we were there. I am really enjoying all your photos, we have been to most of the places and it is great to "meet" a kindred spirit.

Certainly do Kaz. I assume you are thinking of the Durango but I have a piccy of both it and the Jeep that I drove from Las Vegas to Orlando.

If the Durango looks a bit smug and please with itself it's because I photographed it right after its moment of glory when it towed a pick-up truck out of a snowdrift. It felt kind of nice to do this as it was a bit like returning a favour from when a couple of lads pulled me off a snowdrift a few years ago when I got stuck going over Mt Nebo (near Salt Lake City). I know it isn't the same lads but when the weather conditions get tough everybody does their best to help each other out.

I snapped the Jeep because I couldn't believe how fast it was icing up. This was just after the drive from Zion to Bryce (about a 2 hours drive in the conditions). The Jeep ended up with about an inch of solid ice around the wheel arches and on the parts of the undertray that weren't close to anything hot. It even iced up the wheels around the valve and threw them out of balance! It always amazes me how we sometimes complain about 'bad' weather in the UK but we really don't have much of a clue in the way of how bad, bad weather can really get. Even these conditions here weren't really bad. It also makes you appreciate that we drive cars like this around the UK all day but we seldom have much appreciation of what they are really capable of. On the drive from Zion the Jeep travelled through snow sometimes about 4 to 6 inches deep, spent almost a week in temperatures that barely got above -4 and dropped to about -12 or lower at night, travelled somewhere between 500 and 1000 miles carrying an inch thick layer of ice and it didn't put a wheel wrong. What's more, the heater got hot really quick in the morning too.

Just shows again how the Americans do everything bigger and better than us brits.

Still looking at the first pictures of Zion Canyon.
It looks so beautiful and peaceful!

What a great place to go to, just to sit and think about life!!
