Sorry as this is not a Florida question, but some of you have used US Airways, which I have not done often. I am thinking of bypassing larger city airports like Chicago, Newark, Philadelphia etc for my trip to Indianapolis next May, because of the possibilty of long waits at immigration. I have found very good connections and fares with US Airways for Gatwick - Charlotte - Indianapolis sector. This means I'll be going through Immigration at Charlotte Douglas airport in North Carolina. I am hoping that it will be easier than the other 'regular' airports and I have allowed 3 hours for the connection to Indianapolis. Has anyone been to Charlotte and its airport? If so, any useful info will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Nostromo,
We have used USair on 4 occasions. Once we went via Philli and it was horrific. Never again, although USair gave us $600 worth of vouchers because of the experience which wasn't their doing but Philli. airport's.
The other 3 occasions we went to Charlotte. We thought this a lovely clean, friendly airport with very efficient personnel each time we have been.
The flight from Charlotte to MCO has always been full and I do advise you to pre-book your seats on your flights.
We class USair as are preferred carrier because of the extra leg-room and good in-flight entertainment.
Have a good flight
Mike and Kath.

Hi Nostromo,
I had good friends return from Florida a couple of weeks ago. They had flown with US Air and like Cowboy were very complimentary about the staff and room.
However it took them 4 hours to get through immigration at Charlotte and they "just" made their connecting flight. Only 3 staff on immigration and very thorough or you could say slow.
It may have been a one off with staff not turning up etc and Cowboy has used the airport 3 times.

Thanks everyone. Cowboy, on this occasion, I am NOT connecting to MCO but to Indianapolis. Charlotte is convenient because of my itinerary: A few days in Danville, including going to Indy 500; then fly back to Charlotte & drive to Great Smoky Mountains National Park for 3 days. Then long drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway before winging back to the Cape Hatteras Coastline and then back to Charlotte for the return flight home.

Heard a fab report on US airways from a Florida Neighbour just the other day! He plans to use US airways again, was VERY impressed with everything. Don't think he went via Charlotte though, sorry.

Ray flies into Charlotte quite often for business and saya it is a good airport. In fact it must be okay as ne is considering using it when we next go to Orlando as an indirect.

Thanks Cowboy (and everyone else). Just to clarify, US Airways use the Gatwick's South Terminal to fly to Charlotte and so the Hotel for Parking deals would be The Hilton Gatwick, wouldn't it? I could then nip across the walkway after breakfast to the terminal & check-in?

Hi Nostromo,
this may be of interest: Virgin Frequent Flying Club have linked up with HHilton Honors club. I have received an email fron Virgin that lets me join the hilton club as a gold member. Automatic room upgrade if available and virgin plus hilton points each stay.
We are staying at the Gatwick Hilton at xmas before flying over so hopefuuly an upgrade to start the holiday off plus extra points.
Let us know how you get on because US Air seem to be getting rave reviews.

Yup, US use the South terminal at Gatwick.

I can vouch for them as well having used them for all my transatlantic travel in the past 3 years.

I would definitely choose Charlotte over Philadelphia, especially for connecting. Philadelphia is a bit like the Bermuda triangle of the luggage world.

I like Charlotte; I find the Southern charm welcome (relative of course when going through immigration). I would go for it.

We went through Charlotte last December, much friendlier Immigration and a very nice airport.

This year they've moved our flight times so we're taking the earlier flight which is now later than our original!. This flight goes through Philli so we'll be able to compare the two
