Tuesday was another lazy day, after a late start (everyday has become a late start) we decided to drive to City Island to see if the Ospreys are still resident. We found two breeding pairs, both with young in the nest, we even saw one of the birds successfully catching fish to take back to the nest. We also saw several Heron nesting in a tree, again all with young in the nest, we looked for dolphins but sadly there were none to be seen. We decided to go back to Siesta key for an ice cream then a lovely long walk along the beach in the afternoon sun, on the way back the party planners were setting up for a sunset wedding on the beach, the location and view is stunning, better than any venue we looked at. We decided to call in at the Hub tonight for a few drinks and some live music, all in all a very pleasant day.
Wednesday we opted for a boat tour from the Mote animal rescue and conservation centre. This took us past the homes of the rich and famous on bird key, past siesta key and and onto some uninhabited island where a lot of birds have set up nesting sites and are raising young chicks. The marine biologist on the tour was very knowledgable about the local wild life, they cast a net off the back of the boat then do a "show and tell" with the animals caught before putting them back in the sea. We caught puffer fish, star fish, crabs, sponge and various other critters who I can't remember at the moment. A very interesting educational tour on a hot and sunny afternoon, but still no dolphins. Before heading back we took a slight Detour to Manasota Key, this is a new area to us, the main town is small and very pleasant with only a few bars and restaurants, the beach is beautiful, less commercial than Siesta Key, there was a sunset yoga class on the shore line, we drove up to blind pass to a very secluded beach with only a hand full of people using it, this is a truly beautiful area, no life guard huts, no sun umbrellas or loungers, just sand, shells and a jaw dropping beautiful sun set. The houses along her are huge!! I thought we had found some stunning properties on Sanibel but these take it to a different level, we really must get that lottery win sorted out.
