Question nest learning thermostat for use on HVAC in our vacation rental villa

    hi,

we have ben using the nest thermostat quite happily since it came out here in the UK.

i see they are on sale in home depot @ $249

will be checking our villas thermostat wiring to see if its compatible with the low voltage set up on the nest.

our thermostat is the original one which came with our new build villa.

"has any one used the nest thermostat in their villa's ?"

    thanks

Not sure if they are suitable for vacation homes as they are a learning module. Vacation homes by nature have erratic usage. Can you set min and max temps?

Looked into this some time ago...
The Nest is available in 24v format (which will work with US systems).
It has many features that, as Martin says, would have to be disabled for STR usage !!!
However, it is in competition with the Prophilix (sp?) & Ecobee systems & is the most expensive of the 3 without any discernable advantage.
Personally went with Ecobee over a year ago &, so far, it has proven it's worth....

Look into the z-wave based Vera system, www.GetVera.com. Very flexible, can control lights, A/C, door locks, and so much more.

yes min/max settings, also humidity level reading.

can use auto-away which defaults to a set level you can decide.

    can be remotely locked.

we are used to it & is easily controled via an android app.

    Different people like different temperatures.
For example, last couple of times we've been to Florida we've been 2 parts of the same extended family in 2 nearby villas (me and the mother in law cannot be in the same house for more than about 2 hours max so staying in the same house is an absolute no no!!) and both houses were set to different temperatures.

We like it cool and always had ours set at 72F.

Sister in and Brother in law are always cold and had there's set to 78F.

Mother in law preferred our temperature but their company!! ( we do get on though really, just in small doses!)

That's what setting min and max temp is for. You can give range but stop folks from pushing the system too hard in either direction, both of which can be costly.

There are quite a few people on t'other Forum who have the nest system and all appear to love it.
