I have been the end of AUgust and it is a lot quieter than the beg of the month. If going the beg of August I would plan for some queues etc.

We went last year from July 22nd to August 20th YES a whole month which conicided with the start of UK school holidays, and we never really had a problem
We actually found the 1st 2 weeks (last week of July 1st week of August) not as busy as the last 2 weeks of our stay, although saying that on the whole we were also told that attendances were actually down last year anyway
We were also told that fewer Americans were hitting Disney due to the prices $2 to the £1 is good for us but bad for them
We never had too many problems getting around the parks, you need to plan ahead a little for what you must do, and make good use of the fast passes available early each day
Worst we had the whole trip was a 2 hour wait for Soarin with no fast pass (as we had gone for a fast pass for test track), on average our longest queues were 45 mins, and most were less than 30 mins
We used to spend half days at the parks, return to the villa for a chill out and then return late afternoon
We also found that hitting the main rides either early in the day or certainly late in the evening just before park closing was a real bonus and saved us so much time
Avoid trying to ride a main attraction in the middle of the day unless you have a fast pass or are mad
And there are benefits going in August as well, the parks stay open a lot longer
